What’s your hat worth?

Don't wear hats and if I did it certainly wouldn't be some silly cowboy hat!!!

First off, it's not a cowboy hat. It's a hat. Everything else is just a cap!:)You gotta face it...it's probably the most utilitarian type of hat out there. Whether it looks like this:

Or like this, it'll protect you from rain, sun, and hold its shape no matter what kind of abuse the elements dish out.

What's it worth? Well, monetarily, a good 100% beaver felt hat will run you close to $500, but it will outlast your grandkids.

However, like in Chris Ledoux's song, some hats are worth much more than their monetary value. For example, one of our former forum members, Biginge, a good friend, who passed away from cancer, gave me a beautiful 100% beaver felt hat. For me, that hat is worth much more to me than the five hundred or so bucks that it cost to have it custom made initially.

Rest in peace, Bill.

"A worn out tape of Chris Leduex, lonely women and bad booze, seem to be the only friends that I have left at all." GB

That line led me to discover Chris Leduex. I think I'd heard of him, but wasn't really familiar with him or his music.

What's my hat worth? Not much. It's an old NRA ball cap. I used to have a dozen or more western hats (Stetson, Resistol, and Charlie One Horse mostly), but they work just fine when driving a full sized pickup. Not so much when you switch to a Kia. All my good hats went to the to the Salvation Army then.

This was me, in another place and time.

The first time I met Ledoux was at Cheyenne in '76,
best I recall he made the short round in the bareback riding
and he was sellin 8-track tapes off'n the tailgate of his pickup truck.

(The same year he won the world at the finals at OKC)
.
Side note: Saw Chris' son Ned perform at last year's Cache County Fair in Logan, Utah. Sounds just like his dad.:)

HAIR and a JOB? :D

Yes, I seldom have the job part anymore. I try to keep my working to under 3 months a year. The job I am on this year looks like it will be over in less than 2 weeks. That will be 11 weeks total and they will have paid me a bit over $50K to wear a hat for that long. The last 6 weeks its 12 hours a day on a 13 days on, one off schedule.

May be a good thing. Enrique Iglesias sounds nothing like his dad, Julio. I have some of Julio's music, NONE of Enrique's shouting.

BTW, a few of Julio's songs make good mood music if you want something romantic when a date comes over. Wine helps, too, of course.

I shocked a young man this evening when I decided to drop into a hat outlet shop. I walked in and asked if they had any U of H caps. He said that they were on the back wall. I went to back wall and selected a quality cotton cap which appeared to be authentic NCAA goods with holographic stickers and such. I had picked the $15 model and was only carrying $12 in cash, so I asked if a credit card was OK. He said sure. I said, I'm Class of '78, I wear caps, and I need this. His jaw dropped, and he said Friday! I said, hopefully we will go to the next level! The country of origin?... we're diverse in Houston.

I've got a few Stetsons and Resistols but the one I wouldn't part with was my grand-dads. He and I both went on our first train trip from Houston to Muleshoe, Texas in '66, he wanted a new hat for the trip, I was 15 years old so I've had it for a while. It is a Borsalino.

I always wanted to try a Borsalino.

I have many, but my most expensive hat would be my Resistol "Black Gold" that came with a sterling silver buckle set on the band. This thing feels like mink. I'm really partial to Resistols myself, long ovals just fit me better, Stetsons are too round inside.
