When did S&W intro 2-piece barrels 64 & 65?

Howdy all,

I came into a couple 3" barrels K-frame barrels cheap and looking to pick up a few cheap donor guns to rebarrel and tune up. I like me the 3" K-frames but don't love the prices.

Of course the donor guns need to have one piece barrels. So wondering when S&W originally went to them on the 64 and 65.

65-7 still a one piece? (I know they have the evil hole)
Where the 64-7's still one piece?

According to the SCSW 4th edition, the 64-8 changed to the multi-piece barrel in 2004 and the 65-8 in 2005.

Stay with 64-6/65-6 and before.

One problem with rebarreling 4 inch guns. The grip frame is a square butt all the way up until late dash 5. Around 1996 all frames went to round butt and in 1998 they all went to MIM. This short range of guns are the best ones to find for a conversion. Non MIM and round butt.

I have a 64-5 round butt that I converted to three inch 357 mag.

I am relatively new to Smith and Wesson only having one revolver, 586 4 inch barrel.
Perhaps a simple question but,, what is a 2 piece barrel and is my 586 a 2 piece?

2 piece barrel is barrel fastened to the frame with shroud ,one piece barrel is fastened directly to frame . your 586 is full under lug one piece barrel . 686 full barrel and new model 66 two piece pictured

Thank you for the quick response, always nice to learn a bit more about our passion.
I have a couple Ruger single action revolvers but new to double actions. My new Smith and Wesson sure is fun to shoot plus at 71 years old I am starting to reload .38 specials for the 586.
