When is the last time you heard anyone whistle?

I learned to whistle as a young'n. My Grandfather taught me how to whistle tunes as well as hailing, or warning whistles. It's a habit, or past time, don't know for sure what to call it, but something I seem to do a lot. It tends to relax me and I find it enjoyable, as does my Bride.

There's a fellow that I occasionally hear whistling tunes while he stocks shelves at my local Kroger. He is quite talented, but he whistles at such a volume that I find it as annoying as a running leaf blower or backhoe backup warning indoors.

How ironic that I see this...

There was a dude whistling the Marines' Hymn in the local Walmart today. Real loud.

When I was a young'n, my dad could whistle from across the globe and I knew I had 5 minutes til dinner.

I whistle every day. I never even know what tune I will whistle; I know thousands due to my formative years from radio, musical training, and my mom's Broadway connections. I whistle in the house, in the shower, in the car, while I walk, while I work (there is a song for that!), and I occasionally wolf whistle if I think I can get away with it in the PC world. I cannot whistle in any way, shape, or form, that can be heard three blocks away; that is a skill I have always envied. But melodies? Mo problem and all the time.

My dad and one of my uncles were extremely talented melody whistlers; way better than I am!

Reminds me of a past co worker. If was not talking eating or sleeping he was whistling. Heck for all I know he may have whistled in his sleep.

I still whistle, but I whistle a little differently from most folks. My lips are not involved - I believe that I whistle through my teeth. My range is even less than my voice, which is about two octaves.

Unfortunately, I was out of the Navy before I realized that my whistling was probably invisible. It might have been interesting to experiment with that while in formation.

Who says no one whistles any more?

Well, if we're going to talk Ennio Morricone ...

There are a number— over 100 — whistle languages, where people communicate across great distances in mountainous country by whistling. E.g., in Turkey, Spain, the Azores, Mexico...

I whistled yesterday when I got the bill for a new set of tires.

Maybe it's just a brain thing but I have music in my head most of the time. I whistle tunes, mostly golden oldies, and I do it all the time. Usually when I'm doing things around the house and there's no TV's on or anyone else talking. I enjoy doing it and always have random songs come up in my head to whistle to. My wife asks me where they come from and I just have to say that they are just there.

Music, at least to me, has always been something I've enjoyed. Life wouldn't be right if music wasn't a part of it. My only true regret is that I never learned to play a musical instrument. The violin, or "fiddle" as my brother calls it, is the one I'd really like to learn. My arthritic fingers have stopped me from doing so.

BUT, I'm still able to whistle along and that will just have to do for now.....

All of the time

I whistle all of the time, when I'm not fighting the computer, or reading, especially when i'm working with tools building something. It is like softly, under my breath, like humming. I whistle all kinds of tunes, and mix them. I was wondering if I was the only one that done this, and feel much better now that I find that others do it also. Whistling in it's many forms has been a part of our culture for ever. As to the ones that don't like whistling, they are missing out on a lot of our history. I am old enough that I even remember the great "Whistler" Elmo Tanner. If you are really interested in whistling, and want to hear a master of the art, look up, Elmo Tanner & Whistling on Google.

I whistle to myself all the time when working on any kind of project. Don't know why--just a habit. :)

The OGCA Whistler

While I was making a transaction at the OGCA this past Saturday a gentleman
passed by me and was whistling a very nice tune, it was obvious to me that he
certainly enjoyed what he was doing because he was so good at it. It was loud
enough that anyone nearby could hear it.
