When I was in graduate school (seems now like another incarnation), I bought a new 1969 Corvette with the L89 option. The car had 427 in3 disp and 435 HP (with todays rating system it would be less). Carburation was three 2-barrel Holleys. The car new cost either $5600 or $5400; I can't remember which. It got 5 m/gal and used a quart of oil every 400 mi. It would not run on any gasoline other than Amoco ethyl. I had to drain the tank the few times I tried other gasoline. The compression ratio was 11.5:1. The car was notorious for dieseling. Sometimes when I switched off the ignition, the car continued to run, but very roughly. When this happened, I had to put it in gear and pop the clutch to stall it.

Regular mechanics of the time could not tune the car. I finally found a mechanic who worked on "funny cars" and who did a marvelous job. The cost for tuning was about $200, which was very expensive at the time. The car really needed tuning about every 1000 mi.

I still think of the Corvette as a young man's car and was surprised to read that most buyers were men in their 50's.

Awesome thread, folks. Thanks for sharing the photos of the rides. Wish I had a project to share. I especially like the photos of the classic Jeeps and Mustangs. Keep 'em coming!

I have a survivor that I bet no one else on this Forum has, or maybe never even heard of. My 1986 Chrysler Laser XT is 100% original and only things changed are spark plugs and tires. The configuration of my new age classic makes it one of a few hundred with its color and all the options applied. I must confess, however, that it is not much good in snow, so only a 3 seasons driver.

1986 was the introduction of the Laser XT. The XT was actually an option package on the Laser XE and provided the turbo engine as standard. A special Carrol Shelby suspension, available only with the XT, provided performance gas charged shocks and struts, and larger solid front and rear anti-sway bars, with P225/50VR15 tires. The has a wrap-around front fascia. Lower body-side sill spoilers are also added, squaring off the sides. These changes made the Laser XT the most aggressive looking Laser ever. The Flash Red was available on the XT only. The XT, ran 0-60 mph sprint in a hair under eight seconds. Quarter-mile came up in under 16 seconds, which was faster than the Camero Z28 and Pontiac GrandAm in the 1986 model year.

I am still waiting for this little car to get the credits it deserves.

Im impressed that youve kept one alive so long.
I had an 83 in the charger variant of the platform.
it was a weekend warrior kind of car... Throw a dart at a US map on a Friday night and it would get you there and back ... provided you made it home before the clock struck midnight Sunday ... at which point, it magically transformed you into a pedestrian.
after several months of beating it into submission with ratchets welders and the occasional sledge hammer, I had a friend hold the radiator cap as I pushed the car out from under it, replaced the assembly with a 87 stang .. then got a new radiator cap ... I've never looked back .. and I still have that pony

2. A Spontaneous, comprehensive, energetic, self disassembly of the propulsion device.
1. It was my turn.

You can buff that out.[/QUOTE]

After just getting it out of the body shop having the damage in the third pic repaired I figured the universe was sending me a message that it was time to go in a different direction:

My first car was a 1978 Pontiac trans am, 403 Olds engine, 400 hey dramatic transmission. Was burgundy with burgundy leather interior. Put 10k into while in the Army. Would pass anything but a gas station. Best mod was the unibody kit. Sold it to pay off my house which the ex got in the divorce (ya I know). Sure do miss it

This was muscle off the lot when my uncle bought it in 1957. I have had it since 1992; 71K original miles and I'm intending to sell it this next year when the Phoenix auction crowd is back. Take a peek while I have it. 283 Power Pack option, 3 on the tree. That's a picture of my son and his High School Camaro too many years back now it seems.

I recognize the track, Beechbend Raceway, Bowling Green Ky,

My old home away from home.

Yes indeed. I used to live in BG and I worked for Holley for about a year. Great town and great track.

Found out it gets a little "twitchy" between 115 and 130 on an uphill curve. Straight and slightly accelerant usually.;)
