I was sitting in my car at Costco and was just about backup out of a parking space. I turned too look both ways and on the side was an occupied car. There was a male adult driver a teenager in the passenger seat and two children in the back perhaps 7-10 years old. I assumed it was the father with 3 kids.

The father passed something to the teenager which seemed innocent enough but the teenager put it to his lips and took a quick exhale of smoke then immediately inhaled it. My windows was cracked down because I had my dog inside and caught sudden strong whiff of marijuana. It was definitely marijuana, what we call a roach (the near end of an already smoked joint). The kid didn't exhale and immediately pulled it out of sight when he noticed me noticing.

What kinda of father would or adult would encourage marijuana use in front of two young children? I was tempted to call the police but they would have been long gone by the time they arrived. Would they even investigate considering its legal here (although the father was driving and its only legal on private property?)

The world continues to change, and social/cultural norms and mores continue to change with it. Always has been that way, always will be that way.

Can you imagine what the people from, say, the 1870s would say about our culture in the 1970s? To name just a few examples think about the way people dressed, the attitude toward drinking/promotion of alcohol, sexual 'liberation,' etc... They would be absolutely horrified! Never mind what people raised in the 1940s/50s think of 2014. Heck, they would be shocked with a lot of what was going on in the 1950s...

So, while I share your concern, and hate to see the "cultural de-evolution" (I just thought of that term, and kind of like it...), it will continue to just get worse. IMO, the movement to take God out of our culture, and the intense focus on selfish individual wants/desires (the so called "progressive" mindset) will make our society and country a worse place to be.

Aside from some medical applications, nothing good comes from that mind-eating drug called marijuana, no matter how much tax revenue it produces, and no matter how much tax savings (savings from court costs, law enforcement, incarceration, etc...) are realized through 'legalizing' it. But, money runs this country, and legalization of pot is just beginning; it will continue until most all states have some form of legalization in place. Heck, nothing good seems to come from alcohol either, but that seems pretty well established these days...

I would have called the police. ;).

Irresponsible, and even with legalization, that behavior is still illegal.
Every society on Earth, will have swings to the left and swings to the right. Just look at the presidents we have had since 1964. Morality will swing, fashions swing, even Earth temperatures swing. Pot will have it's negative effects, just as any substance abuse will, it's use will level off after it's novelty wears off. It's just sin, not the end of our country, we're all sinners, and always will be.

You want to smoke pot?
Who cares?

You want to smoke pot and drive?
You would be DUI and should suffer the consequences before some innocent does!

You smoke pot in a car with kids in it?
Same as giving them a shot of vodka - AKA Child Abuse.

The scene that you described reeks of reckless endangerment.
You should have got their plate number, a good description (or take a pic or movie with your phone), and called the cops.

My neighborhood kids hung around my garage. I help them fix there dirtbikes. One of them was making fun of another one saying I'm so cool i blow a bone with my dad in the woods that's so awesome I'm like my dad. Sad isn't it.

It cost me broken ribs three times and numerous flights over the handle bars taking my son riding quads and dirtbikes keeping him away from peer pressure. There is so much to do in life than drugs.

I laid down the hard truth about young kids in jail and what happens. He didn't believe me. We seen a karate movie were it showed it. My son turned to me and said you told me the truth. I told the kid I don't lie. I have money for our hobbies but I have no money for lawyers or getting you out of jail. Your going to rot in jail the choice is yours.

I was the first scared straight or let's say a scared straight warning. I put reality into the kids mind.

My three kids to this day never used drugs. We all got high on life together with our hobbies.

My wife was complaining in front of my neighbor about what my dirtbikes cost. My neighbor said your lucky its$1,000 for ever lawyer visit for my son getting into trouble. My wife never complained after that.

It's up to us as parents to mentor and guide are kids we lay the foundation for there lives in the future. If we fail as adults they don't stand a chance.

Get off the couch and get involved with your child. They need both parents.
If your divorced pick your child often even for a burger and fries every minute you spend with them mentor them find out about what's going on in there lives. Help them if they need help. Be there for them. Don't use the child to spy on your ex. Kids aren't dumb. Use the quality time to bond with your child it's his or her life you need to put back together.
You made them there your blood and flesh. Let grandma and grandpa help too your child needs to see good family bonding and values.

God bless, bigbill

Even become a big brother or big sister and help a child.

My neighborhood kids would say things like my dad's home drunk. One kid just got out of jail. He is such a good kid, respectful and willing to get involved to help others out. There are no bad kids there misguided. Inside them there is a good kid trying to get out.

That makes me sick. There is no place for marijuana in this country. Shame on the parent.

I'm pretty conservative myself, and perhaps it's better if I don't express my viewpoint on what should be done with drug dealers and smugglers.I'm hearing way too many stories of teenagers getting involved with pot and low cost heroin.
That said, the only way to end the drug scourge is to kill demand. If there is a demand, there will always be a supply-that's the harsh truth.
I would also add that I'm not opposed to strictly regulated sales of medical marijuana. Those suffering with cancer and chemo should be given anything that relieves their misery.
