Hi,
I'm considering getting into reloading. Where do you guys buy bullets and powder?

I'm starting with 38 Special and 357 Magnum.

Do you have recommendations that you like?

Thanks

Powder Valley.
Midway USA.
Your Local Bass Pro.
Call the reputable gun stores/ranges in your area.
Other members will add to the list.
It all starts with manuals for reloading.

Lotsa scammers out there with prices too good to be true.

I get bullets from Everglades ammo and Missouri Bullet Company.
Powder and primers at the gun show. You might check local gun shops for primers and powder too. Take your time and start with lots of 20 to 50 rounds. Repetition is a good thing, before you know it you will be making runs of a thousand rounds.

Where are you?
Best bet is support a local independantly owned and operated dealer who is knowledgeable about handloading. That is, if you can find one!
Once upon a time, the small Mom & Pop family-owned gun shops were the best. This type of mutual relationship between customer and vendor can’t be beat. They met the needs of the true lifelong enthusiasts and left the department stores (predescessors to today’s “big box” stores) to serve the casual once-a-year hunters, etc.
Getting primers and powders was as simple as driving to the store. Then, the drives got longer, sometimes to another state, as the small stores were swept away by the big box stores. Then, the big stores decided their retail shelf space was better used for other things.
Gun shows were an OK stop-gap for a while. Not anymore.
Now, we scavenge the online wasteland, in the hopes that an old favorite powder can even be found, knowing we are gonna get scalped (shipping, handling, and hazmat add to the insult) in the long, dreary process.
If you belong to, or can join, a reputable gun club you might find a good alternative to all of this is to work out a group purchase.

At least bullet needs for 38/357 can best be filled over the long term by learning how to cast your own. It’s a fun and rewarding hobby in its own right!
Despite my complaints, I hope you get into handloading. It is plenty of fun and you’ll learn alot!

I second Missouri's coated bullets....

You can treat them like jacketed bullets and they are a LOT cheaper. I also have used a variety of coated, lead, plated and jacketed bullets from various sources when they have what I want at a decent price. There are a lot of people I get components and supplies from. Midway, Powder Valley, Ammunition Depot, Sinclair, Graf and Sons, Outdoor Limited, Widener's. SOMETIMES I find what I want at a walk-in store. :D

The thing about ordering powder and primers on-line is that you have to buy enough to justify the hazmat fee and the shipping cost.

I’ve had good luck with Missouri Bullets as well.

Cabelas has had some primers “in stock” (I.e. available to order online for a brief period) several times recently. I recently was able to order primers and have them shipped to the store that’s only half an hour away. No shipping, no HAZMAT fee, and no worrying about an adult signature for delivery.

Grafs have always served me well.
Powder Valley
Midsouth Shooters Supply
Widners
Midway USA
Brownells (though not so much recently)

I only purchase from well established companies online. A purchase of things that go BANG! should not start with “Psssst - buddy - have I got a deal for you.”

I buy lead and coated from Missouri bullet and jacketed when I see what I need on sale. Shipping cost varies from one company to another so that is also a consideration, no one local to me has any selection of reasonably priced bullets. Same considerations for powder.

Another consideration that may be relevant, at some shooting events the supply houses set up and sell their wares and usually at good prices with no shipping. When I was shooting rifle I always bought everything I needed for the next year at the commercial row at Camp Perry during the national matches.

I buy from three local gun dealers who also sell reloading supplies and accessories .
From a local Cabela's Store ... I drive there (20 min drive) .
And I buy brass from two local indoor shooting ranges .
I do this ... buy locally especially for Reloading Powders and Primers ...
on these items there are Hazmat Fees and Shipping Charges which do jack the prices up considerably .

My two online sources have been Starline Brass Inc. ( you can order new brass straight from the maker ) and Powder Valley Reloading ...
both reliable and dependable companies .

I buy where they have them. Most have been identified above. I also use Bass Pro, Cabela's, Sportsman's Warehouse and make my own. Just depends on what I want to make.

Be careful on going down the reloading rabbit hole. It leads to some very deeeeeeep places. You go down the reloading rabbit hole there is nooooo coming back.

just sayin:D

Since I live about an hour from Power Valley I usually put in an order for pickup. I try to buy in quantity so only make 1-2 trips per year. Have to pay for gas but no shipping or hazmat. We have several retailers but PV usually beats their prices.

Besides sources that have been mentioned above, I find that locally the Ranch & Home Supply stores seem to have stock and at times better prices too. I've had good experiences online with American Reloading out of MO obtaining primers with hazmat/shipping included in their sale prices.

Another source is if you belong to a local gun club it seems that some people are getting out of the reloading hobby and you can find some good deals there on components.

There's a place about 2 miles from my house called Jerry's. That's where I buy my bullets. I have not needed any primers or powder for maybe 30 years. I stocked up around 1979. Still using what I have in stock.

Occasionally I want to try different projectiles. I have bought some from Bang and Clang LLC, Berry's, and Missouri Bullet Co. Also some came from Acme. Happy with all of them.

Edit - forgot I bought some Xtreme bullets from Bass Pro Shops until I read one of the responses below.

I should also mention Old West, many heeled bullets came from them, and Western Bullet Co out of Montana.

Depends on where you live. There may be a local source and these can be useful places for info as well as components. There are quite a few online sources as well but I mainly use them for items I can't find close by. Here in Ohio I use ET Brass a lot. They do the OGCA and Tri-State shows and will also ship any non-hazmat items. Their primer & powder prices have been fair, just have to pick up at one of the shows. If they are out I usually buy local from a nearby gun shop to avoid hazmat fees.

There's a good local gun and pawn that sells a variety of reloading components, so I try to get what I want from there if possible. I have also done online business with the following retailers:

Midway USA
Missouri Bullets
Midsouth Shooters Supply

It might help if we knew where you lived. I've used Acme, Precision, Blue and Brazos bullets. Brazos are high quality and reasonably priced. I buy primers wherever they are cheapest online or at a local shotgun range. I buy powder at the same local shotgun range.

I seldom buy from any source but Powder Valley. Prices are hard to beat, and service is excellent. I've been a customer since they've been in business, well over thirty years.
