Where Do You Keep Your Long Guns?

That's pretty cool. What hold them in? The front sight block?

And with all the gear on the side I'd toss that closet to see if there was anything in it. Just saying....

The butt stock fits in a holder & the gun lock is a ratchet that fully opens. It is vertically adjustable & fits around my guns just fine. Best place to locate it, if possible, would be just above the magazine well, as I did with the 15-22. My Stag required me to place it above the Eotech. You just want to place it where someone can't lift/slide the gun up.

My main concern is keeping little hands off of the guns. Out of sight helps. Locked in place helps more. I live way in the country, down a one way lane with nothing but red neck farmers around me. My house has a gated entry plus I have 10, yes 10, dogs that live in the house with us. The farmer at the end of the road has lived there all his life & has had only one thing stolen... and that was from a relative. Real common to leave home & keep garage door open & doors unlocked.

But even then, I have insurance and they are just things. My only real concern is gun safety but then I do live in a rather special, safe place.

My stuff is normally kept with the bolts removed, trigger lock on, in a bag or case, inside a locked closet. Only exception being my home defense "assault weapon" =O which is kept sans trigger lock, with a loaded mag resting just inside the closet door =)

Too scary for me. If I were to get killed... so be it. If an accident were to happen & some innocent person get hurt or killed... just don't want to think about that.

There is always a loaded firearm easily accessible to me. I am not willing to bet my life, or any of my family that may be visiting, on how fast I can get the safe open. Home invasions happen in seconds, not minutes.

So you play the game of percentages. What is more likely to happen... a home invasion where you need your gun immediately or an accidental discharge of a gun? I don't know the facts but I do believe more folks are killed by accidental discharge than by a home invasion.

IMO, this gun lock I'm using is the perfect compromise. It is the same device used in police cars. It is designed to lock the gun down but open with the touch of a button. So in my situation, my rifles don't have a magazine in them... but they could & still would be safe from little hands. If I were to put a switch in my bedroom, then I could easily unlock the guns on the way to get them. There would be no delay & no fumbling for keys or trying to remember a combo. Just walk in & pick up the gun that was securely locked down seconds before. No delay of minutes... instantaneous.

I sure am no expert on such matters & have much to learn from you good folks. However, I am rather good at research. I found this place... didn't I? I researched different gun locks & this one seems to fit my needs. Is it as secure as a 1000 lb gun safe? No, but I don't live in the city where crime is prevalent. Does it keep kids from messing with it? Yes it does. Does it provide instantaneous access, if & when needed? Most certainly. If it is good enough for law enforcement, that is good enough for me.

Your house is your castle, so do what you want. I personally will not keep an unlocked gun in my house... but that is just me. With my setup, I believe I can get my gun as fast as anyone else. Even if you keep your gun behind a couch, you could just as well lock it down with one of these.

I don't see how your locking racks are going to defeat kids over the age of 2.

Emory

Please explain. Have you seen one or touched one? Have you studied it on the internet? You really believe law enforcement would use such a device if a 2 year old could defeat it?

As I said, it is not as secure as a gun safe, but it is MUCH MORE SECURE than a loaded gun leaning in the closet... isn't it?

Give me the right tools & yes, I could take it down. Probably would destroy the gun in the process, but I could get it down. This is not a replacement for a heavy gun safe & I have never said so. I will absolutely guarantee you my God kids will not defeat this. As I said, this is a compromise. It provides some security from theft, lots of security from kids hands and still provides me immediate access. That is perfect for me.

Redneck Jim,

There is NO such thing, as an ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE.!!!! There are only NEGLIGENT DISCHARGES.!!!!!

Paul

Paul, I have never thought of it like that but you are exactly right. Thanks... I'll remember that.

I do what I do to primarily prevent negligent discharges.

Ok the first part "the Chicago way" is pretty much the safest way to store guns(for untrained, undisciplined, marauding kids), but the second part totally negates the first.

When any of us grew up...how many "accidents" were there?

We had rifles, pistols and shotguns all easily accessable in my house as well as all my freinds. We knew not to touch them without dads OK.

Now, that being said. If I had any weapons in my house my kids would be the same.

You live in the boonies, redneck, most of us don't. There have been over a dozen home invasions within 50 miles of me in the last year, five of them resulting in fatalities. I also carry virtually every time I leave the house.

Some people live with their heads in the sand, others have them on a swivel. I know which applies to me. :)

FWIW, the only children that are ever in my house are my grandchildren and all of them are active shooters, including the nine-year old who has his own 15-22. He's been shooting for over a year. Even if everything were out in the open, it would not be a problem at my house because they have been taught proper gun safety. I admit a toddler or two is a totally different issue.

No one in my house younger than 20s and everyone knows what they are doing, I'm good =). the ones I have disassembled are strictly target guns, I'm just usually too lazy to reassemble completely after I clean them. Plus it makes my liberal inanimate object fearing mother feel better. I just don't talk about the HDW all ready to go sitting next to it all.

When people are over the closet stays locked and closed, problem solved.

I should also add I don't keep my HDW with a round chambered, just a loaded mag. I am fully aware things fall over in creaky houses (i dont have a rack, yet) no negligent discharges will happen in my home.

Good Lord, you live in Baghdad? :)

Mississippi is looking better all the time.

I have one of these in my bedroom closet. Not fireproof, or fool proof... but good to keep out of access from my kids.

In wall safe

I think I paid less than $70 on Amazon.

That looks cool & actually had an employee today asking about that exact type safe. I'll let him know.

I think if I had it, I'd order some safety type labels saying "Danger - High Voltage" or something like that.

EMP's

Nuclear Weapon EMP Effects

I wonder about keeping weapons under any form of electronic lock.

An EMP can come from a nuke or solar activity. There could be a lot of high dollar safes with no way to open them.

I was a Minuteman Missile Combat Crew Commander, so am rather familiar with EMP & the damage it can cause.

This gun lock comes with a key to open also. The electronic aspect is just for instantaneous access. Failure of that part would not prevent you from opening the lock with the key.

Also, at the point we have nukes going off over Mississippi ( or actually anywhere) then all locks come off & guns will be out & ready. :)

It is called the real world.

Actually, compared to Baghdad where I live isn't too far off. I also carry every waking hour. There isn't going to be a ND with my firearm as it is in a properly designed holster, and I don't mess with it.

As for holding my wife hostage, I'm gonna want to know why she didn't shoot them herself and save me the trouble. She also EDC's. About the only time that'll work is if they hold a kid hostage.

I'll admit this is a possibility as my gun is locked up at night, but it is in a safe on the bed side table.

As for your locks, Ah, I didn't see that butt cup. Thanks for pointing that out. These actually look quite decent and a nice compromise between locked and accessible.

If I am home the AR is handy but out of sight. Away from home locked up tighter than Fort Knox as all my few guns are.

I can not imagine not having a loaded ready to go firearm in my home and in my automobile. I have two gun safes to store my regular firearms, but my personal protection arms are certainly not going to have locks and or disassembled. I teach my grandchildren well just like I taught my children and like I was taught. The best gun safety is between our ears.
