I went to a new range for the first time yesterday. I don't own any land that I can shoot on, This is only eight miles from the house so driving is not a problem (gas wise). The owner only charges $100.00 per year. He built it for himself, but deceided to let others shoot for road maintence. He has a 100 yard set up with benches, roof, target holders, etc... Also a 25 yard range for rimfime and pistol.

So I go over there, and the 25 yard range is so muddy that I skipped it. So I go to the 100 yard range. The shooting position, and the target position are level and nice. But there is a deep valley between. You have to walk down, then cross a bridge, and climb a steep hill to the target area. I hung my home made paper targets and came back.
I started shooting my M&P, and couldn't tell where the shots were hitting. So I had to walk over and look. After about 3 times I said screw it. I always keep some balloons in the bag, and carried 5 over. Stuck them up, and hiked back. I have my sigths that came on it, along witth a red dot(No Mag)..

It took a full 25 rounds to bust all 5 of the balloons, but what the heck with the rain and wind, and a .22 with open sights at 100 yards- I felt OK.

Lessions learned?
Need a spoting scope.
Need some sand bags, or something.
Need better targets.
Need to start teaching a kid how to shoot, and then go get the targets.

I had a good time!!!
My wife said " The exercise will do you good!
Yup - Our kill me.

This part of my range. The back stop is about 14 miles away:D

I feel sorry for those who have to go to a range to shoot. We can shoot just about anywhere and anytime. Living in the sticks does have its advantages.

I used to have a great spot about 15 miles from my house. After 9/11 I stopped going out there with my guns. I recenty went out there with my new 15/22 and found that there are no longer any firearms allowed on the property. Now I have to join a club...$150 and I have to work on the range for 10 hours....bummer.

It's about 15 mins or so from my house and well worth the $100yr...We can even go camping/fishing/shooting for the weekend..I also found out, that I really need a spotting scope too :D I have started to go to the FridayNightSteel matches and found I need to really work on my quickness with my SR9c

I'm lucky I guess. i built a 100 yard range on my property about 1/4 mi. from my house in an old claypit. I have an 8 foot covered shooting table(bench) with matching seat and back table for guns/ammo etc.. I keep clay birds and empty plastic oil cans to shoot. Have several steel gongs hanging at different distances and a target box built into the ceiling of the bench. I can go...be alone and have a ball!

Just got my first gun, and now I see that my land north of Casper will definitely come in handy Iggy. Especially since my local gun range closed near me in the SoCal desert. Bud

Durn, I thought my 100 mile drive the ranch was bad. You're gonna have a hell of a commute to your range.;):D

Thar ya go!! Watch for the cowboy on the bluff near Chugwater the next time you go to Casper.

That's Mr Iggy's 'Short Range'. You ought to see where he does his Looooooong Range shooting.

Yeh, but I ain't got one of them shoot today, hit tomorrow guns like you do.;)

We shoot out at my buddy's "farm". One is maybe kinda a farm, it used to have pigs and some crops, now it has grass and some grapes haha. The other guy calls it the farm just because, but its a wooded lot with a lake and a cabin-ish thing. they both work well.

i will be taking my very first range trip to a nice publice range in bloomington illinois its almost an hour away from my home but after doing an exhaustive search its the only range i could find that was close to where i live and also wheelchair accessible

Iggy,
Is that your target holder in the background?

A friend of mine has a range set up on his land, which makes for some good get-togethers. About 15 miles away. BYOB
Sportsman's club, about 15 miles away, 25-yard, 100-yard,
and trap. $35/year
Public land about ten miles away. It's an ald gravel pit, three different ranges, one of which allows 100-yard shots.
Now, if I could just get the time to go to anyone of them, I'd have it made.

Yeah!!! About 25 of them.
Call it a platoon.

I had a great situation while living in Las Cruces, NM...Rifle, pistol range, 10 berms, no range officers...All FREE....No one to bother you except the "brass scroungers"..
Now, living in AZ, I haven't found a dirt road leading into the desert where I can enjoy the same freedom...I'm paying $7.00 to a public range outside Buckeye, AZ, and the drive and payment has caused a strain.
I envy you guys that have all that land...

I have a 25 yd slow fire indoor range that's just a few miles from my house, and go there about every other week. $20 per year for membership, and $9 a day to shoot. Not too shabby. We also have a free open range up north in KC that I have yet to go to, but am itching to go once I get a good rifle.
