I need to go to bed early more often. Did ya'll know that it's sometimes dark in the morning?

Anyway, I've known Charlie Sherrill for about 40 years, so he seems to think he has the right to drag me out of seclusion by posting lies about me on Internet forums like this one. Now that I'm out of my cave, I figure I'll update the few people here who remember me with some info and musings about my disappearances after and before the shroudless pre-20.

The fact is, I don't shoot as much as I used to, at least not revolvers. I rediscovered a love affair with Mister Browning's 1911, so my focus has been on those old slabsided monsters for a while now. And like I once did with N and K frames, I've allowed a few of them into my home, where they live comfortably and well.

I also fulfilled a lifelong ambition by delving into the 1863 and 1874 Sharps rifles. I didn't go out and buy a slew of originals, though, I got hooked on the Shiloh line from Shiloh Rifles of Big Timber, Montana, and prior to that based in Farmingdale, New York. And when I fell, I fell hard. I haven't loaded a round of ammo with smokeless powder in about a year, and I spend a lot of time slaving over a pot of liquid lead allow at around 750 degrees. I've even shot in about a dozen midrange matches using black powder, big calibers and tang sights. There's nothing quite so satisfying as hitting a target I can barely see at a range of over 1/3 of a mile.

So that's it. I've trimmed down the handgun herd, but rest assured there are still a few select S&Ws here, and here they will stay. But my more recent obsession has taken over my life, and it's even more expensive than the pretty one-handed guns.

So that's it, folks. Off to the back of the cave again.

Nice looking guns. I have not dealt with any like that so I don't know anything about them.
I have to ask, what is the white or light gray above the case on those cartridges?

Edited to add: Is that front, center case cracked right at the rim?

Lelandray.

I've been a BPR addict for many years. Been the paper patched bullet route too. I'd hate to think how many pounds of lead I have sent down range from a Shiloh or a Trapdoor rifle.

That black powder is addictive.

Good to see you back. I bought a Ruger 1911 this year and have been trying to get use to it. However, 40 years with at 70 Series Gold Cup has spoiled me.

Those bullets are "paper patched," meaning that two layers of very thin paper are wrapped around the bullets. This is the bearing surface for the bullets while traveling down the bore, as the bullets themselves are bore diameter, not groove diameter. The paper patched bullets shoot a good bit cleaner, as well as giving enhanced accuracy (once the proper "formula" is worked out). These can be shot without lubrication so long as some method is used to clean the bore between shots, or just as commonly, after a select number of shots. One other method is to use a "grease cookie" over the over powder wad (black powder needs to be compressed to work well), and a light wad of some sort over the lubricant cookie to keep the lube off the base of the paper patch.

Here you can see the over powder wad, grease cookie, patched bullet and wax paper "separator" which are all stacked together to make up the final load.

Iggy, it's addictive, ain't it? I like doing something not everybody else on the block is doing.

I love my Sharps, a 45 2 4/10's by C. Sharps in Big Timber. I dont do the paper patch thing, but I do use real blackpowder.
Your load is 100gr weighed or 100gr volume? I use 90gr weighed (45-90)

LelandRay,

That it is. I've managed to bag quite a bit of game with those two rifles.

Right now the Shiloh has a .22 cal bbl insert in it. I took it to an indoor 50 foot range not too long ago. I was gittin' some real serious sideways glances from the RO's when I squared away on a shootin' bench. They was lookin' daggers at me until that big ol gun went "pop!" Then they really wanted to know what was goin' on.;)

29aholic, I weigh all my charges. Used to use a volumetric measure, but I found me a way to weigh effectively to +/- .1 grain very quickly and easily.

I have a Shiloh #1 Sporter in 45 2 4/10, and I've shot it in several midrange matches. I stuff it with 86 grains of Goex FF, a .060 Walters wad and a Lyman Postell cast of 20:1 lead/tin. Pretty good load, if I do say so myself.

You ever seen Keith Lay shoot? He has the Creedmoor Cup and won the Quigley last year. He's a sawbones up around Bay Springs, MS.
