Anyone have any ideas? I have scoured the net and no luck. I have a new to me 4040PD and I want to replace the Hogue grip with a factory grip. Just missing the factory pin.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, The Karnivore

Are you sure it's missing? As I recall, the factory grip pin is used to hold the black plastic block that the grip screws go into. There are even holes drilled in the Hogues so that those pins fit in. That block also holds the main spring in place, in case my earlier description wasn't clear.

At least that's how all of the Hogue grips I have work.

Sometimes the pin gets put in the Hogue "block" sometimes it doesn't. If its not there, call S&W customer service. They usually have them in stock as most models use the same pin.

If the mothership can't help, have you tried MidwayUSA, Brownells & Numerich? There are several other sources you'll find mentioned in various threads. Don't forget your friendly LGS as this is a very common part.

...But if a pin isn't holding the Hogue block to the frame, then nothing is keeping the grip from pulling off, other than friction.

Actually, the Hogue's don't need the pin because the grips go around the block and it ain't going anywhere with or without a pin.

From what I've seen, the Hogues have a cutout for standard length grip pins, but will often come with the smaller mini-grip pin which won't work with Delrin grips.

Karnivore, I have not found 3913 or 3914 grip pins in stock for a while now. You could call S&W and see, otherwise try and find a 6906/5906 grip pin and shorten it yourself. 6904 grip pins have been around lately. I've also used modified trigger pins for grip pins before, rounding off the ends first.

Why will the short pin not work? All the Delrin grips I've seen have a tab that fits between the fingers on the back of the frame. The short pin may not engage the outer portion of the grips, but if you use a pin punch to center it in the frame it should work just fine - just like it works for the Hogues. Maybe you have a modified set of grips, but this tab is what fills the hole when you look up in to the butt of the weapon.

Good point Hill Country, I never thought about that inside tab.
