Where were you when JFK was shot?

North Island Naval Air Station, working in the VP-48 Avionics Shop....front hanger, second window from the left, working on a piece of ASW equipment, an AQA-1.

I was picked up from Kindergarten by my mom, from Mrs. Adams class, in Calipatria, (Calipat) CAL.

I was 18 months old in Cisco, TX; Dad said he heard about it on the radio in the truck with co-workers on his way to work the evening/night shift on an oil drilling rig.

I was in the 5th grade at St. Rita's in Chicago. I remember when Ruby shot Oswald, I was playing with my H.O. soldiers on the living room floor and ran to the TV to see the Dallas cops grab Ruby.

I was working at the Kresge store in Towson Md. Shortly after the news came out on the radio, the whole shopping center was empty of customers. The parking lot was empty except for employee cars. The radio was playing funeral music. It was a day to remember.

I was in 5th grade gym class. Everyone was escorted to the auditorium. The principal made the announcement that the President had been shot, and that classes were over for the day. Not one kid let out a cheer. It was a very somber moment.

After the announcement, and school was dismissed for the weekend, we met with our drill team master sergeant. He told us to be ready for extra after-school practice. There would be a special memorial done by the school band and our drill team at the annual Male-Manual High Schools football game, traditionally held on Thanksgiving Day.

I was the guidon at the time, and we worked a special detail with the band, and the whole thing came together flawlessly in a matter of three days.

At the game there were over 20,000 in the crowd. I can still remember the minute of silence. Not a sound was heard in the stadium as the band members removed their hats and bowed their heads. Our drill team presented arms, 03-A3's muzzle-down with bowed heads; my guidon tip touched ground. The Manual High School band did a similar salute when their turn on the field came.

As with the announcement, Thanksgiving 1963 is as crystal clear today, as then.

2nd grade. Madill elementary school. Ogdensburg, NY. Mrs. Loucks and Miss Conent (student teacher). Both were crying.

We were changing classes, I was in the 10 grade. we were told the news as we were changing for gym class. in was 3o'clock in the afternoon. My parents were heartsick about the loss.

Home from school, sick on the couch. I seem to remember church bells ringing afterward.

Kennedy

I was in 10th grade study hall. One kid broke out crying. Can't remember too much more from school that afternoon but I remember a girl I had a huge crush on and had a date with to take to the football game that night called to break the date because her Mom said it wouldn't be right to go out that night.

I hate to admit it now but to tell the truth, at the time I was more upset about the broken date than about Kennedy. I had the hots real bad for that girl!

I was 19, in class at Machinist Mate "A" School.. Great Lakes naval Training center, Ill....
