Which 3 would you choose?

My choices would be as follows.

1. M&P340 (or sub in a 442 in a pinch). One must always have a good J frame at the ready. :)

2. M&P 9c/Glock 26, whichever you may already have. Both have long-ish barrels for a sub compact (3.5 inch) and both are relatively light in their class for being double stack and being able to take higher capacity full size mags (although this is a moot point in California)

3. M&P45 midsize/compact or XDm 3.8 compact. For when you want to carry big bore or just feel like carrying a larger firearm.

Other than the J frame, I'm not really settled on one gun in any category. I actively carry all the guns listed above and I find them all to overlap so they are basically interchangeable within their own class.

I would only go to Commifornia if I were incarcerated or kidnapped!
This kind of comment is unnecessary and completely off the grid for a thread like this. Also, unless you're lying with your screen name and badge, you know good and well that you would have gone to CA had the USAF assigned you to Edwards, Travis or any number of bases here when you were on active duty.

Yes, CA has some terrible gun laws and some idiot politicians. The problem isn't that the politicians are anti-gun; most aren't. What they are is pro-vote. If gun enthusiasm were popular, all of them that are proposing all this gun legislation would turn 180°. Why? Because they don't care about the legislation, they just care about getting votes. So, they think that by enacting more gun laws, they'll get more votes. So far they've been right.

CA is actually a nice place to live. While the rest of the country is freezing, I'm out at the range shooting Trap and my pistols. And, there is more to life than guns.

A voice of reason :)

CA CCW is not limited to 3 guns and is not limited to 10 rounds.

Many Sheriffs might not want to squeeze in another gun on the 3 lines provided; it can be done and was done on mine years ago when I carried up North.

I also carried a Glock 19 with hi-cap magazine. You can own the ones you had, just can't buy any more. That's why I bought some hi-cap mags for guns I didn't even own at the time, but knew I'd probably buy down the road, like my Glock 23.

IF I could put only 3 on a new CCW if & when (Puh-LEEZ happen!!!):

Kahr P45 in .45 ACP
Glock 23 in .40 S&W
S&W Model 49 in .38

CA Penal Code 26175(i) Any license issued upon the application shall set forth the
licensee's name, occupation, residence and business address, the
licensee's age, height, weight, color of eyes and hair, and the
reason for desiring a license to carry the weapon, and shall, in
addition, contain a description of the weapon or weapons authorized
to be carried, giving the name of the manufacturer, the serial
number, and the caliber. The license issued to the licensee may be
laminated.
26200. (a) A license issued pursuant to this article may include
any reasonable restrictions or conditions that the issuing authority
deems warranted, including restrictions as to the time, place,
manner, and circumstances under which the licensee may carry a
pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon
the person.
(b) Any restrictions imposed pursuant to subdivision (a) shall be
indicated on any license issued.

IF no restrictions are listed, you are only restricted by existing Federal and/or State law (i.e. Airports, Post Office, etc.) Schools are NOT off limits if the permit doesn't say so.

626.9. (a) This section shall be known, and may be cited, as the
Gun-Free School Zone Act of 1995.
(b) Any person who possesses a firearm in a place that the person
knows, or reasonably should know, is a school zone, as defined in
paragraph (1) of subdivision (e), unless it is with the written
permission of the school district superintendent, his or her
designee, or equivalent school authority, shall be punished as
specified in subdivision (f).
(c) Subdivision (b) does not apply to the possession of a firearm
under any of the following circumstances:
...
(l) This section does not apply to a duly appointed peace officer
as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of
Part 2, a full-time paid peace officer of another state or the
federal government who is carrying out official duties while in
California, any person summoned by any of these officers to assist in
making arrests or preserving the peace while he or she is actually
engaged in assisting the officer, a member of the military forces of
this state or of the United States who is engaged in the performance
of his or her duties, a person holding a valid license to carry the
firearm pursuant to Chapter 4 (commencing with Section 26150)
of
Division 5 of Title 4 of Part 6, or an armored vehicle guard, engaged
in the performance of his or her duties, as defined in subdivision
(e) of Section 7521 of the Business and Professions Code.

There is a LOT of BS floating around about what CCW is and isn't in California. Don't make it any worse than it is by making stuff up.

Is that ONLY 3 hanguns in total or only 3 cc type guns? Example would a 6+" 22 target pistol, or a 7 1/2 " 44 mag single action (neither a c/c gun) count? If 3 total FOR ME: Sig 220 stainless 45 acp with a 22lr conversion, a J frame 640, Sig 239 in 9mm.

He's talking about a CCW permit, not a permit to own. Your specific carry guns go on the permit. Target guns (unless you really want to carry one concealed) are irrelevant.

CA CCW is not limited to 3 guns and is not limited to 10 rounds.
Like I said earlier, the issuing authority can limit the number of guns on your license if they want. Most limit it to 3 because that's the number of lines on the standard license. Here in Kern, we can put more on the back. Another county, I don't remember which, sets that limit at 5.

While it's true that you can carry mags with higher than 10 capacity, most new shooters don't have this option. Also, it is possible to get an exemption to own/carry mags with higher than 10 capacity. I don't recommending carrying mags with more than 10 because the hassle you'd get isn't worth it.

What is this exemption you speak of?

Sorry. Misread the op.
I must have replied before my nap. I have a lot more cogency now. Not much though time for bed. :)
Strike the Model 41 and add a Model 3913 to my list.
What a great trigger on the 41 though!

1911
1911
1911

...and Kali is the nicest state coupled with the worst politics.

Seriously, though, I'd be fine with a 1911, a J frame, and an N frame revolver.

I pulled my old Humboldt County, California permit out of my files. I have listed:
Colt .45 Auto
Glock .45 Auto
Glock 9mm Auto
S&W .357 Rev.
American Arms .22 Auto
Each with the serial number...

Any J frame, a lightweight centenial would be preferred. 340pd, 442 would be first and second choice.

A snub nose 327.

Any 1911, but a scandium s&w commander would be preferred.

Are the three guns you chose, listed by serial number? Or just model? Because it is nice to have a twin to your carry gun in case something breaks. Or in the case of the j frame, nice to have one in each jacket pocket. If you are even allowed to carry two guns at once.

Good luck, I hope the law does change in your favor. Ed
