The darker brown or a gray-brown is the way to go with the stainless and nickel guns. So the Kuracs win.

The Ahrends would look right if they were Moradillo or Walnut instead of the reddish Cocobolo.

The birds-eye maple needs a blued gun to really show their best attributes.

And the factory targets...look like **** on their best day, regardless of what gun they're mounted to.

The Spegels and Kuracs both look good.

S&W always seemed to put yellowish to blonde wood on their stainless revolvers and so that is what looks normal to me, but those cocobolo stocks are really spectacular. If you like the shape and feel of them, they are certainly handsome on the gun.

I always find I shoot a gun better with one pair of stocks, so I guess if I were you, I would select the ones that feel the best, and the ones you can hit with the best. :)

Exactly. How they look is secondary to how they feel. The guns I shoot the best are the ones that feel the best in my hand. Grips are the only interface you have with the gun, that matters a lot more than how they look.

If you're just going to a barbecue to show off the gun, the Kuracs and Spegals win, hands down. If they fit your hand the best, it's a win/win. ;)

Yep.

To me:
The Ahrends feel the best with Spegels coming in a real close second. If the Spegels were just a little longer they would fit perfect. I think once they age and get a little more "golden" tone the contrast will come out and they will look even better.

The Kurac's are of the utmost quality and look great. They just don't fit my hand. I would take them to a BBQ over the Ahrends.

The S&W don't fit any human hand that I can tell. But they came on the gun.

Some s&w targets can look really nice. Your though do not fall into that category. I would go with the kuracs followed by the spegals.

I voted for the cocobolo Ahernds because I've always loved the black & orange contrast in fancy cocobolo and that's a particularly nice looking piece of cocobolo, but as the others posted, it's what fits your hand that counts. That's a great looking revolver no matter what wood you put on it. The wise ones chose its style for the forum's symbol for good reason, but they had to go with a rarer old blued one to please the older collectors.

Those Ahrends look terrible on that gun... hideous in fact. So much so that I would be honored to save you from further agony by taking them off your hands and even pay you to do so...

I am thinking of putting the Kuracs in the classified section. I might try to get a trade for some full size Spegels?

They look great. I might just have a funky hand. Well I know I do. I will probably get carpal tunnel surgery this summer. Maybe I'll hold off till after that. My finger tips and most of my right hand is numb.

Definitely the Kuracs.

I love those birdseye grips but they belong on a black or blue gun.

Thanks for the comparison pix. I have been looking into
stocks for my 624's and Mountain Revolver for awhile now.
After looking at the pictures and reading the well informed
opinion I believe I will call Craig Spegel for a set of ebony
extended boot grips for my 3" 624 LH.
I will still be looking for some for the 4"ers. I might go with
Herretts for one of them.
I agree the dark wood (and contrarily ivory) looks best on
stainless.

I just refinished my first set of grips (for my old 1984 Redhawk).
These grips came from the factory as the driest pieces of walnut
you could imagine. They looked like birch and could be shaved into
tinder.
I slapped some DemBart London oil on them and sanded between
coats with 600 grit wet/dry (it's what I had).

They look small but actually fit my men's adult large hands very
well. I had Pach presentations on for hunting but they are
HUGE for this weapon, especially wearing gloves.
These grips have that perfect feel and must have been designed
by someone into the single action grips that have not changed
in over a hundred years cause they work.
This gun has taken many deer between myself and the buddy
that used it for several years. It's indestructible.
Sorry for the Ruger shill in a S&W forum. :P

My 6" 629 has taken deer as well.
Then again so has my Beretta 12ga. Ultralight O/U.
(I cannot count the number of pheasants this gun has
accounted for).
I live in a rifle free zone. Good place to be a handgun nut.

Sorry, but I'll take the factories. I KNOW they don't fit any human hand, but, they got the logo! You can always change them out for shooting, or, pay Hogue about $130 for custom with logo. No, I won't do that again, they were for a 6" Colt Diamondback .22, which I no longer have.

As far as looks, I like the Ahrends best. To me they just make your Smith "pop".
