A local shop has a new in box14-4, and a '52 5 screw in real good cond, but wrong stocks, no box/papers. The dash 4 is a 3T, the 5 Screw has Target Hammer, Service Trigger, and newer Mags.
Hes got the 5 priced about $300 less, and I can not buy both.
Opinions?
Thanks

Welcome to the FORUM! Pictures would help determine quite a lot! Condition is very important. Mechanical function needs checked also.
I have a 14-3 that was bought right, and shoots well & no issues.
Letting us know the asking price also helps. Bob

Hi Bob, thanks for rolling out the Wecome Mat!
I dont have any pics avail but the -4 is nib.
The 5 screw is nearly perfect blueing, very clean and function is 100%. Grips are not original, but look new. Comes w no accessories.
Hes around 700 & 1000, the dash being the higher of the two.

Buy the one you cannot expect to find later in equal condition/quality at a better price.

If you really really want the other one, sell something you can replace and buy the other revolver.

HTH. Sincerely. bruce.

I think the prices are high. Not by double but somewhat high.
For some reason, the Masterpiece and model 14's suffer A lack of appeal to most collectors.
They are a target gun and my 14 no dash has an action like a Swiss clock right from the factory. I think they are one of the last true bargains left to be had for a reasonable price amid all the Smiths that prices have soared on for the last 2 years.
I think you would be doing well to get the 5 screw for $600 and the 14 for around $750-800.

I appreciate the input, guys. I also like your recommend prices better! Would anyone be willing to sell me theirs at a more reasonable price?
I've been checking the classifieds and LGS's, not seeing those ^ low prices.
Thanks guys

Everyone has opinions. Those opinions are influenced by many factors. The fact is that all gun prices are on an upward trajectory at this time. But there are still good deals to be found.

Often, we base an opinion on "what would I be willing to pay". For both the guns you mentioned, IMO, they are both priced in the ballpark. Having said that, the 14-4 would not interest me at a price of $1k. There are lots and lots of 14-4s and it is easy to find them at lower prices. However, at $700 for a very nice K-38 Masterpiece, I would be reaching for my wallet. The older (pre model marked guns) are getting harder and harder to find, especially in nice condition.

Case in point, I obtained this K-38 late last December. It was shipped in 1950. I gave $589 for it. I thought it was a great price and am very happy with it. In my database, I have it valued at $700, but I think it is worth more. It's not a museum piece, but it is still pretty darn nice. If the one you are looking at is as good or better than this one, to me it's a no-brainer.

But that's just my opinion.

The k-38s are awesome to shoot. I don't buy safe queens, only shooters. Of the 2, I'd pick the one with the better trigger. I assume that would be the older one.

Five screw would have me hagglin' real hard. I wouldn't even try on the -4.

Old one

I would try to get them to come
Down a little , but like it or not
These are today's prices.
The pre 14 is the better deal.
