My EDC is a S&W J-frame Mod. 649 .38 Spl. in a Mika pocket holster.
I started with the Mod. 49 and liked it so much I picked up the stainless version, retired the blue boy, and I do not worry about the finish. The Mika holster is fantastic for me. Stocks are as you see them in the picture. They give a bit more to grip than the S&W wood stocks. As for load, I use any good off the shelf .38 Spl., lead or jacketed. I know that is heresy, but I feel very safe with that rig, and all I need is in my pocket. The whole issue can be over-thought and over-bought in my opinion, but I am into self-defense, comfort, convenience and safety; not looking to go into mortal combat on a daily EDC basis. If I am going to a fight, I will gear up quite differently.
S&W Model 38-0, Liberty 90grain ammo, uncle mike #3. My wife altered all my jeans R.F. pocket an extra 2" deep. Fits like a glove, very little printing.
Every day for about seventeen years I've carried a 640 no-dash, one of an early (1990) group of about 5.000 with the CEN serial prefix, factory-etched "TESTED FOR +P+". It's loaded with the Buffalo Bore version of the good old Remington FBI ammo, it has Pachmayr Compac grips, and it's almost always in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. In some pockets, not many, I use the Uncle Mike's #3 model for a better fit.
It's my primary and only carry gun, though I'm considering a Ruger LCP as backup or dress-occasion primary.
I hope I never have to use it...but I want the best possible advantage and fire power if it come down to it.
It is like backpacking, you carry all that need for the trip, but not all that you want. If I go into a 7-11 at 11:25 PM I plan to go home with my Pepsi and mint paddy and my life. That sir is ambitious.
