Which powder ???

I'm wanting to settle on one powder and buy as much as I can afford to load for 9mm, 38/357, 45ACP, & 44 Special.

I'm thinking either Titegroup or 231 would work well in any of those cartridges, but I'd like to know what you guys would recommend.

I just started reloading and have used both W231 and Titegroup for 9mm with great results. I bought them from Powder Valley in 8# kegs each,even with the hazmat charges it was cheaper than buying it local here.

I use a LOT of 231 for my handgun rounds.

WW 231 would be fine for light through standard loads in all of those cartridges.

231 or Unique would work. I would prefer 231 for all of the rounds you listed.

I use 231 for 38 Special, 357 Mag, 44 Special, 44 Mag, 45 ACP and 45 Colt. The Magnum loads are mid-range loads. It works fine for all.

To be clear, as much as I like and use HP38/WIN231, you can't load full power magnum loads with it.
You need WIN296/H110 for that.

Sgt Preston here. I use Win 231 for all my 9's, 38 Specials & 45 ACP's. The powder meters very well & I have found it to produce very accurate rounds. I don't have any experience with the 44 Specials though. Hope this helps. Sgt Preston USMC LLA

AA2 has become my all-around powder. Meters better than most, including 231. Economical. Out-performs Unique in most applications, not that that's saying much. Seems to burn a little cooler than Titegroup, so it's a little cleaner with lead bullets.

Id choose Universal clays, cleaner than unique and ive found it more accurate.

Just to re-iterate, Winchester 231 and Hodgdon HP38 are THE SAME powder. I was dubious at one point too, so I called Hodgdon up and YEP, same powder, different can! (Ditto for W296 and H110)

On to the question... I like W231/HP38 over Titegroup for those calibers, especially when considering lead bullets. I'm still just not a fan of Unique for some reason. (gasp!) I also really like Bullseye for mid-level magnums.

Oh, and for full power mags, it's either H110/W296 or 2400 for me.
