Which "Pump" Riot gun would you get ??

I'm a bit old school and would love nothing more than to have a nice wood and steel 16" 870 that we carried in our cruisers for years. (We recently switched over to Mossbergs.)

Recent troubled times also led me on the hunt for a good pump gun. Nice old guns are not to be had in this neck of the woods so I had to go new. Remington 870 Tactical with the Magpul stock. Pretty basic 870 design. It does have a rear peep sight integrated with a picatany rail and a white dot blade front sight. Not old school but a rock solid proven design.

Chuck,

I'm no expert but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night. For $274 you can go to Wal-Mart and get a Mossberg 20 guage 28 inch. Load it with 3 or 4 buck and you will be perfectly fine.

With that length you can have some fun shooting clays too!

Now some people will say you've got to have a 12 and you've got to have an 18 inch so you can maneuver. Well, if someone is in my house, I ain't going looking for trouble. I'm staying put in the bedroom ;). As far as using a 20:

Consider the 20-gauge shotgun by Massad Ayoob:

This is the current Military Combat shotgun since 1991.The Armed Forces has bought a few 100,000+ of them. They are reliable even in sand where the Benelli M4 failed.Metal trigger guard&safety, double thickness barrel. The 590A1 follower lays in the down position and when loading funnels the shell into the mag-tube without pushing and holding the follower like the 870.A big plus and does not pinch your glove or finger trapping it like the Rem. 870 does slowing down reloading and shooting,(it don't matter in a hunting shotgun). The 590A1 is the most reliable combat shotgun in service by the U.S. Armed Forces. This is the one you want 1st choice by Uncle Sam and proven in combat ,Mossberg - US Service Model 590A1 Shotgun ? The Ithaca with its single action bar is the weak point of that shotgun. For heavy use and firing off baracades the action bar breaks the weld at the forearm ring. I have welded several for L.E.over the years that broke decades ago. Also they are hard to clear if they jam. A good hunting shotgun like the 870 but not combat riot's.

Mossberg 590A1. Ghost Ring sights and bayonet ready. Do a search to find the difference between that and the regular M500. The tang safety works better with standard type stock vs pistol grip folder.

Remington 870 , Mossberg 590 with hogue stock ( did not care for the angle of the pistol grip on the speed feed stock ), and Ithaca 37. All three are 7 + 1.

The Ithaca is light and fun to play with. But for serious social occasions, I would grab the 870 or the 590. More familiar with the operation of the bottom feed, side eject, slapping a round in the side eject port,, etc.

I have never seen the advantage of the slam fire feature, but the Ithaca is capable of that. ( actually without practice and training I feel it's a feature that could cause problems )

I think , for a lefty the tang safety on the Mossberg would be a plus.
I have run a few hundred rounds thru each, without any problems.
So, all seem dependable.

I do not have a Winchester 12 or 97, but if I ran across one at a good price, they are on my short list..
Just my 2 cents,, :)

THE model 12 was my 1st choice, if I remember correctly, and I agree an open fixed choke in 2 3/4" should be all that's needed. The only problem is if all you can find is 3" rounds you are SOL (sure outta luck). A big + IMO is a shorter lop stock and I like the Hogue over molded stocks/pistol grips/forends, + extended mags. It seems like EVERY used multiple gun purchase I ever made included a M.B. 500 or Maverick pump. At 1 time I must have had 6-8 of them set up for anyone from 5-7 foot tall, with every stock/pistol grip etc. I have downsized to a mere 3 shotguns, 2 Beneli, a SBE & a Montfeltro 20ga and a Belgian Browning double auto 12 ga. I still have the 24" pvc pipe fixed to the underside of my adjustable bed mattress where the P.G. mdl 500 used to live. MY CURRENT sd shotgun is the Beneli SBE 12 ga 3 1/2" chamber extended mag with a full size pistol grip stock, loaded with 6- 3 1/2" Dixie tri balls which consist of 3- 60 caliber 325 gr hard cast balls at 1100fps. I feel this 2 oz payload would handle ANY man/beast/Zombie at ranges from 0-30+ yards. I wouldn't mind an 18" bbl'd 870 (wingmaster please), M.B. 590, or coach gun with exposed hammers & triggers wired back, (DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME).

Were these registered with the Feds? Shotguns have to have 18" barrels and be 26" overall to be legal. Rifles can have 16" barrels and be 26" overall.

No one suggested a High Standard pump shotgun . . . is there a shortcoming or just not as well-known as the Remington, Mossberg or Ithica?

Although much fewer in numbers than the others, the High Standard K-120 Riot (1926 - 1984) in either the 18" or 20" barrel with 6 or 7 round tubes rode more than a few miles in police cruisers.

If you are already familiar with the 870, then go with that. There are plenty of options available, but I would look for an 870 Police Magnum. Mine is blued with old school walnut stock, plus a factory 7 shot extension.

Nothing wrong with Mossberg's BTW. If I went that route, I would get a parkerized M590A1. Or a M500 with 7 or 8 shot extension.

This Remington 870 was my choice for fifteen years. I did everything from busting birds, to clays, to appliance disposal with buck and slugs.

For the past few years it's been this 1100. It is soft shooting and reliable with any load and a joy to shoot.

Both are late 70's manufacture.

I have owned several over the years. The one I have now is the Maverick 88. No frills, works well. I have also owned a Winchester model 1300 Defender that was very good.

The Winchester 1897 are long in the tooth and prone to parts breakage. Not a good first choice ,but a nice relic. I have one made in 1918 and shooting hi-brass in it is shooting loose. Now it is only lite field loads for the old girl.

My Mossberg maverick is awesome. I have a few different length barrels for it. From the 18.5" riot barrel to the 30" duck/goose barrel. It's a great shotgun.

I need a little advise from the members here.
I'm wanting to buy a 12 gauge pump gun for
home defense and "Stuff hits the Fan" situations.
I don't want all the tacticool stuff, just a basic
pump gun with good sights, extended tube for
more capacity, and sling swivels so i can throw
it over my shoulder and move.
I Don't care if it's wood or plastic stocked.
Only pump shotgun i have ever owned was an
870 (not a riot version), and it served me well
in the woods hunting.
I don't have a large budget.
Trying to stay under 500 on this one.
What is out there that's reliable, available,
smooth, and inexpensive?
What would you look for at a large gunshow
or your favorite gun shop?

Chuck

There are only two choices here, in my opinion. Either Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 - actually, I prefer the 790 LE version with the 18 inch barrel and the standard length mag tube, not the 20 inch with the really long magazine tube.

Either will serve you well.

That said, I believe a better choice is an M4, such as the Colt LE6920 SOCOM or a high quality bucget version, such as the M&P Sport or the new Ruger AR556. Less recoil, less likely to over penetrate in standard construction materials and easier to shoot with stock adjustable to fit the shooter.

Police guns are exempt (or may be registered). The old Federal Ordnance in El Monte had a slew of 1897, Mod 12 and 870s on sale that were 16"==had a 2" barrel extension welded on. Almost got one.
