Hey all.

I have a 65 with a 3 inch barrel that I want to start carrying now that it’s cold outside.

I have a set of rubber grips from many years ago that the previous owner (an LEO) included in addition to the factory round butts. I put a Tyler’s on it and carried it for a while a few years ago and then I found the rubber grips with finger grooves and tried them a bit. I haven’t carried it in a few years.

I was thinking of getting a set of Pachmayr Compac grips to see how they feel. No one close to me has any in stock that I can handle to see how they feel.
I know there are 2 different round butt carry grips made by Pachmayr for the K-Frame with a round butt. I’d like to get your opinions on which one of these feels best.
If you have any tips on where I can pick a set up, new or used, for a good price, please let me know.

Also, is there anyone that uses the factory round butt grips with a T-Grip attached as your carry grips?

Thanks for your time and help.

Merry Christmas everyone! Have a blessed Day!!

Merry Christmas
I prefer the Hogue Bantam, but the Pach compact with open back is a close second.

Merry Christmas to you as well!

If you have average hands I think you get along best with the regular Compac grip that has a covered backstrap (also less pain with shooting). The Pro has an uncovered backstrap and seems too small but it probably less bulky for concealment purposes.

I would look online at auction or sales sites for these. The earliest ones have no logo and this style came on some of the 686 CS-1 guns.

No one here who doesn't know your exact hand size and shape can tell you which fits your hand best.

I have a hand that fits best in gloves marked XL. I don't know whether that means "40" or "extra large," but I do know that my hand is small to medium size among male gun owners. K round butts are fine, K square butts are marginal (too large, and work best with Safariland/Rogers plastic finger-groove grips.

I would surely like the Compac Pro (uncovered backstrap) grips best with your gun, although the Compacs are best on a K-roundbutted N frame that I own, perhaps because the gun is larger and heavier. If your hand is like mine, a rash and probably incorrect assumption, either grip would work.

Others may see things differently, but I claim that covering the backstrap with rubber, per se, does NOT affect recoil perception. FIT to your hand is what affects recoil, and if the grip fits, it does not matter whether it is wood, metal, plastic or rubber contacting your hand.

See for yourself.

If I'm gonna carry, I prefer the closed back Pachmayr grips on my 64-2. Otherwise, I go with my Hogue smooth wood combat grips.

Our issue 681's had Pachmayr grips. Didn't do a thing to reduce recoil. There were some kinda spongy rubber grips out there, but they'll grab your clothing and EVERYONE will know you're hiding something under that pile of cloth bunched up on your hip.

Mine came with factry grips and Uncle Mike boot grips. I like the UM's OK, but find the factory, with Tyler's T, to be better at mitigating recoil.

I put these Charter Arms rubber ( Uncle Mikes ??) on my old Undercover. Really like them. I shoot the CA better than my 36 or 642. :)

I use the Compac Pro Pachmayr grips on 4" Model 66s and 686 for IDPA Revolver Division, and on all my 4" or shorter K and L frame revolvers. I use boot grips on a Model 442.
Rubber grips require more care in selecting what type of cloth you use for concealment.

Another vote for Compac Pros.
Have them on my Shorty 66.

I've used both still have a set of Compacts on my round butt 4"686... I wear a med. glove!

My 3" concealed carry K-frames (65 &66) all wear wood Spegel Boot Grips

And if you prefer open back, there are these. I don’t seem to have the box,
But I think this is the name-
Pachmayr 03272 S & W, K & L Frame Round Butt Compac Grip

I may have missed the part on how you are going to carry the revovler

For deep cover, IWB and pocket carry I like the Pachmayr Compacs.

If I am carrying OWB in a nice holster and I want rubber grips, my choice is the Hogue LE grip. This is a very good grip for full Magnum ammunition.

The only firearm that I have the Pachmyr Compac Professionals (uncovered backstrap) on is my DSS Model 19 and that is only because that is how the firearm shipped from Smith & Wesson

I do not like the Pachmyr Compac Professionals because they have a shorter length of pull than the standard Compacs
