Which three guns?

For Alaska, it's simple:

1. Pump 12 gauge with 3" or 3.5" chambers (My Mossberg 835 will fill the bill).

2. Heavy Handgun (My Reeder custom Super Blackhawk in 454 Casull)

3. Medium Rifle [S & W (Howa) 1500 in 300 Win Mag or my Weatherby Vanguard (also a Howa) in 338 Win Mag=both are control feed!]

This is a fun what if question.

Out of my safe it would be my Ruger M77 Hawkeye African 9,3x62mm big game. It kind of fits nicely between a .35 Whelen and .375 H&H for power with recoil about like the Whelen.

Next would be BRNO No. 5 Deluxe .22 LR for most small game. It is accurate a reliable.

The last gun was a harder choice. A shotgun makes sense if waterfowl, and grouse are to be taken sportingly as they should be, on the fly. Then again, really being a sportsman is all fine and dandy if survival isn't on the line. You can shoot sitting ducks, limb swat a lot grouse and kill still rabbits with a .22 rifle.

So, I'm down to a hand gun as my third choice. Even now when hunting and hiking I carry a handgun. Here I mostly carry a 2 1/2" 19-3 .357 mag. We're talking bear, big bear and moose country. While hunting rabbits and grouse with my BRNO No. 5 .22 I would feel much safer with my 5 inch pre 29 .44 Magnum...you just never know what might be around the bend.

I would take my BSS and BPS hunter and Blackhawk .45 convertible.

Snares for small game shotguns for birds and close range big game both 12 gauge and a handgun for protection.

Well.......

Why not charter a second plane to bring what you really want for the trip. Nothing wrong with more ammo, other guns, a six month supply of whiskey and other comforts (not Spam......yuk...) :)

Just say'in...

Oh, that 5” pre-29! Be still my heart!

Thanks to all who responded to my “survey”!
It pretty much turned out the way I thought it would but I was slightly surprised how few “heavy hitter” rifles were listed, especially with bears in the mix.

Many people forget that 45-70 is a Heavy Hitter! Also 30-06 and its brothers have killed every animal on the planet (that goes for 8x57 also) !

12 gauge pump 870, Ruger 45 Blackhawk narrowly beats a 69 Smith and a 358 Winchester bolt come with. If small game are involved leaving the CZ452 home may have the most regrets. OTOH, the last moose I shot lasted our family of four for 18 months, though moose was not the only meat we ate. Shiras moose are much smaller than Alaskan so realistically it's shoot one and stay for 2 years with a good freezer.

Limited to choosing from the current menagerie:

Enfield #4Mk2
Remington 870
Colt Gunsite Pistol

The Canadians relied on the .303 to patrol the arctic until a few years ago, it should work for me.

Winchester 71 .348 with handloaded ammo (tougher bullets than factory ammo).
Marlin 39 carbine . 22 LR
Ruger Blackhawk . 44 mag (probably my old model flattop that's been cut to 4 5/8" with 250 grain Keith bullet handloads.

But, to follow the rules, from the guns that I have:

Winchester Model 70 .223

Browning Hi Power 9mm

Tri Star O/U 12 gauge

My 870 w/ slug barrel, my Yugo Mauser in 8mm, my Ruger Mk II, and an appropriate amount of ammo for each.

I could stay well-fed with those.

One of my three has already been there!

My Choices would be my Rem 700 in 30-06 and 180gr ammo, Ruger 10/22, and my 4 inch 629 44mag with 240gr ammo and a few rounds of 44 shot shells.

I have a 71 deluxe and had considered that, but felt I needed a rifle with a scope in case a long shot was warranted.

Winchester M 94 .30-30. No, wait, I think I have to take my Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 as my rifle. It's stainless steel, shoots to point of aim at 100 yards, and can take down any game, predators, etc. That's 1.

My shotgun would be my Ithaca M 37 12 gauge. I wish it was stainless steel but, no matter, it's elected. That's 2.

I know I need a .22 but I never really was a .22 fan, not counting shooting suppressed .22s, and all my .22s are pistols and I'd prefer a wheel gun in that environment so I'm taking my 4" Model 686+ with a supply of both .38 Specials and .357 Magnum rounds. That's 3.

I can get the ammo that I need in the one can allowed.

But I'm not going. It's too cold there......... :D
