Which three guns?

Thanks to all who responded to my “survey”!
It pretty much turned out the way I thought it would but I was slightly surprised how few “heavy hitter” rifles were listed, especially with bears in the mix.
Forrest ( Capt. F)

I think the constraint requiring the gun be one we currently own played a role in this. The only rifles I own that are suitable for anything other than small game are chambered in .30-30 and .308. Hence my choice of .308.

I will say that after seeing @Bill Bates brilliant observation (relieving me of the need to be “sportsmanlike”) I’d trade my Remington 870 for my Mossberg 500 and ditch most of my 12 gauge ammo in favor of 10 slugs and a boatload more .22.

Ruger 77 in 338WM, 40 rounds of 250gr, Ruger 10-22 and carton of ammo. 4" S&W 45colt and as much ammo as would fit in the remain space in the can. Most of my small game would get snared. Some light cable takes up little space and snares hunt 24 7 and set correctly will only snare your target animals.

Ruger 77 in 338wm and 40 rounds off 250 gr, 4''S&W 45 colt and 100 255 slugs and a Remington bolt 22 that I cut the barrel cut to 18" and as much ammo as I could fit in the rest of the can.

One thing I notice is some guys go way over board on big rifle ammo. 6 months is 26 weeks even 13 deer is to many, 1 moose is a bunch of meat, as are 2 caribou. Bears don't do mass charges. One guy listed 100 shotgun shells, that don't leave much room in an ammo box. This isn't sport hunting, birds and rabbits can easily be taken with a 22. My kids used to kill blue grouse with rocks.

But, the majority of my small game would come by way of snares. Thin cable is light, takes little space, works 24-7 and when set correctly only catches what you target

Hopefully such a trio by itself never required! Nor such spatial constraint for ammo! (With respect to the OP, thinking he was imagining a large ammo can indeed and not a .30 or .50 cal can from gun shows.)

Ithaca 37 12 Gauge from 1953 and ~10 #6
Mosin-Nagant M44 w2-7 Vortex scout scope. 20 rd S&B ~182 gr
"Mk 1" Ruger 4" .22. Then fill can with CCI MINIMAG HPs

Remington 700, in .30-06, plenty accurate, plenty of punch.
Remington 870, 12 gauge. I'd really like to take my 1957 Light Twelve, with Poly-choke, for ducks and other fowl, and for slugs, for bear protection, but if there are geese, really need a longer chamber. Plus, the A5, although it has always been reliable, is 64 years old, with wood furniture. My 870 is plastic and Park'd, with a 3 1/2" chamber. Boy, is it ugly and tough!

Toss-up between a handgun or a .22 rifle, for number 3. Today, I'll opt for a 629-6, with a 4" barrel, for personal protection, and to use, if Griz gets on top of me and I can't swing the shotgun, or it's loaded with bird shot.

What's in the safe.....................

Mossburg 500 w/ three barrels 18, 24 slug barrel with a 1-4 scope and 28 inch. When I spent 2 summers in Ak in the 70s everyone with a homestead had/wanted a 18" loaded with slugs behind the kitchen door. Mix of slugs/buck and bird/turkey loads. Sling!

Living east of the Mississippi .... guess my 681 with 158gr soft points. Box of 50

Ruger 10/22 International stainless..... 1-4 Leupold scope.

Is that a .30 cal or .50 cal. can? :)

Y'all are cheating with all the selections of Savage M24 . :)

The selection of two firearms , with the space/ weight savings going to extra bricks of .22lr is not without merit .

The big variable is how much emphasis on shooting really big game at long- ish distance vs strictly survivalism .

For up close & personal with Big critters , Breneeke slugs will do as well as anything , but you'd have to stalk within 75- ish yards for deliberate hunting. But for small game , bricks of .22lr are a lot more weight/ space efficient than Shotshells .

I would carry my lefty Remington 700 in Rem 7mm Mag. It's my largest caliber rifle. Then my old Ruger 10-22. The hard choice is between a scatter gun and a wheel gun. I guess my Rem 870 with a slug and rem chock barrels. If I thought about it any longer, I might swap out the 870 for my Classic DX Model 29 in .44 mag.
As far as ammo....heck yeah and lots of it.

#1:Rifle would be my Rem 700 in 35 Whelen with my Trijicon Accupoint 3-9 (no batteries for lower light needed). Bonded rounds for the penetration if needed against bear, but I would be more interested in smaller game for food supplement.

#2:my Rem 870 12 gauge with Slugs, buck shot and bird shot. I would want this over a .22 rifle for use as a back up to my rifle if I should have any parts/scope break. I was debating the 10/22, but thought redundancy the better route. I have ghost rings so slugs are easy out to 100 yards. 18" barrel, but still usable with birdshot on small game.

#3 would be my G20. I don't have a .41 or .44 magnum, so that 10mm would give me a viable handgun so that I'm never without something on me.

And yes, where is the fast food restaurant...?

1. Winchester Pre 64 Model 70 30-06 with Leupold VXIII 2.5-8 Scope
2. Remington 870 20” 12 gauge
3. S&W K22 Outdoorsman 22 magnum

8ft grizzly taken in Alaska 2004 with Win M70 300 win mag.

OK the woman just text me and broke our date tonight because she didn't feel good so I'll play. My camo Ruger 10/22 take down with Weaver 1-3X scope, a 12 gauge 1187, and my Howa 1500 6.5 Creedmor with Vortex Diamondback 4-12X. I won't get into the ammo I need to make a few calls and get another date tonight.

Cheater cheater pants on fire

My Tikka Whitetail 308 Winchester, Remington 870 12 gauge, and my Anschutz 54 Sporter 22LR. One of those three could be used for anything I might need to hunt.

From the safe:

M1 Garand
Marlin 39A
Ruger Old Model Super Blackhawk

Best regards,
