I need some more .38 Special ammo, and Freedom Munitions is having a $7.50 flat rate shipping offer this weekend. I was about to get some of their 158 Grain RNFP at $137.50 for 500 rounds. Shot the ammo before with no issues, but for $10 less for 500 rounds they are selling 158 Grain HP ammo. Why would that ammo be cheaper ? Is there something I'm missing ? What might be better for plinking ?

which is better for plinking??
If it's just for plinking, the gr weight shouldn't matter, so... The less expensive.
How's your WM set for .38?

WM ? Not sure what you are referring to... Just never came across HP ammo that was cheaper than RNFP before. But then again, I don't usually come across HP ammo in .38 Special...

WM = WalMart.
Mine does handle some calibers in JHP.
If JHP is cheaper than RNFP, I'll train all day with it.

Oh ok. Walmart is not allowed to sell ammo in New Jersey where I am. Seriously lol. Ok, thanks.

FWIW, I have not seen ANY .38Sp ammo in my WM here in the valley for months, certainly not this year. .357 has also vanished. Wonder if this carries over to WMs in other areas. Plenty of 9mm, 40, .45 in 50-, 100- and 250-round packs.

Walmart in Michigan has good prices on 9mm, but 38spl FMJ are $23.00 for 50...way higher than online...especially from Freedom Munitions.

I have been seeing the Remington UMC .38 Special JHP in my WalMarts lately at just under $40 / 100 round box.

The .357 has gotten very expensive, above $60 for 100 of the same R - UMC.

Not sure why the price difference between the 2 but whatever is cheaper, if you are just looking to shoot it up, would be my choice.

Freedom also sells "NEW" ammo that is much cheaper than what I can find locally. Although what the OP was looking at does appear to be remanufactured.

I have the MP9 Shield and I would like to try some 124gr. ammo. Presently I am shooting 147 gr, Winchester T ammo, but I would like to try the Speer Lawman 124gr.TMJ. I have read or been told by some, that the Shield was designed around the 124gr. RN . Any suggestions or information?

I'll second getting ammo from sgammo as I have done business with them and am totally satisfied. JHP pistol and revolver ammo around here must be made of unobtanium as I never see any. Frank

I've never noticed that price quirk with 38 special. I'll have to keep an eye out. But I can testify that jacketed hp 44 mag can usually be found cheaper than jacketed fn. Don't know why. Also, 44 special usually costs more than the magnums. Go figure. The only explanation I have heard is that they make more of the popular rounds so it's some kind of economy of scale thing. Don't know if I buy into that.

I've shot FM 9mm, 357sig, 38spcl, and 40.

It's worth a couple more $ for Prvi in 38, Speer or CCI fmj in the other calibers.

FM isn't bad, just 7/8 there.

I order from SGammo, real solid to buy from.

I was working through some early issues with my Shield 9, and was told by the CS folks that 124g was the weight of choice / design. We finally got mine to work well with all standard 9 weights.

That is the kind of info that I am looking for. I have been shooting 147 gr.(WIN T&D) and for some reason it seems to shoot high. (POI) I just purchased some Speer Lawman 124gr TMJRN. I have not been to the range to try them, but hope to go tomorrow.

124 Grain

MartyBee, just an FYI, while I prefer 124 grain, I've been lucky in that my Shield hasn't had a problem with any grain. That being said, I've placed bulk orders with FM for their new FMJ 124 grain rounds and have found that their powder burns cleaner than most other brands I get like American Eagle, Remington, Winchester WB, Federal and others. For awhile I was getting Speer Lawman at Cabela's but there were on close-outs and I haven't seen them since. I did like them a lot and they burned clean too and were accurate so I haven't shot my remaining supply. Regards, Elliot45

Anything for target or plinking.........................

RN are ok but a flat tip makes a nice round hole in paper that is easier to see and score if you do that sort of thing.

Good price.

Thanks, Elliot45.
I found some Speer Lawman 124gr. at Target Sports. At 11.99 a box of 50. Free shipping on case lots of 1000. These are: TMJ. I will probably order a case, after I have shot these.
