Out for the duration
I was going around my usual business yesterday, and came across a feller that said he had some old ammo that he didn't think was any good any more...

So, I took this old ammo off his hands:

Some of these are full, some of them are half shot- but all the brass is there. At least, now I have a little vintage target ammunition.

Someone certainly used to shoot bullseye!

I'm going to give him some canned goods cause I think he'll like some. :)
The gun store told him they didn't want it.

I tried to explain to him it doesn't go bad, but he thought otherwise and it isn't safe.

Score!

Not only is that a lot of good ammo the brass is tops for reloading.
Those Western midrange wadcutters are really nice. Might work real well for self defense in a snubby.
Seeing all that good ammo makes me want to get a model 14 or 15 to send it down range in style.
It must have been your lucky day.

I'm green and yellow with envy, great find. Would you make up several full boxes and sell them as collectors items? or just shoot them. I tend to shoot any ammo I have and 148 wadcutters are a favorite of mine.

If you want to sell any empty boxes, I would love a Peters Police Match box for display. That is pretty cool. Have fun shooting it up:D.

What a deal! You'd think the gunstore would want it to sell at a discount. I wish more people would think ammo goes bad after a couple of years.

I can understand the store not wanting it, since they don't know if it has been reloaded or whatever. Most of them won't take returns on ammo if you bring it back five minutes after walking out the door.

As noted, though, there's definite collector interest in older ammo and even empty boxes.

I hope you went out and bought a lottery ticket after that. But you may have already used up all your luck. Good find!

Raining on the Parade...

Not to be a nattering nabob of negativity, but don't count your chickens before they ALL hatch.

It IS possible for ammo to 'go bad'... I'd be very interested in knowing why the old gent though this was so...

I agree that it is possible- and saw where a friend's old .30-30 ammo did in fact "go bad" and foam at the neck...it is most unlikely and rarely encountered.

There is no signs of this going bad, other than some of the boxes are soiled from being handled or stored in dirty locations. He said it shot fine- 30 or 40 years ago, but doubted it would now. I'm just glad I got it- instead of someone else, or the most likely and scary place- the dump.

As long as ammunition is stored properly it will last a very long time without deteriorating. Think decades rather than years. Heat and humidity are the enemies of ammo and extremes of both should be avoided as much as possible.

I would be interested in purchasing a box or two of each if you would be willing to part with some. I would use them for displays with my vintage Smiths. If you would like to share your luck with a fellow collector please let me know. You can PM me here or email me at fdisklad (at) hotmail (dot) com.

Thanks,

Have fun and be safe.

All that terrible old ammo just might break a gun or two of yours. I'll be a real pal and take some of it off your hands and make sure it's destroyed quickly so it can't hurt anyone! ;)

Hey, good for you, that's some score. That Targetmaster ammo is very accurate and was top of the line when it was in production. You are going to get some tight groups with it if you do your part.

What terrific luck! I'm sure you'll enjoy shooting the ammo as much as the other fellow will appreciate the canned goods he'll receive in return.

WHAT A SCORE!

The ONLY similar thing that ever happened to me was once when I went down to the Range, there was a fellow who pulled out a pristine unopened brick of Remington 22LR ammo. It was the sea foam green and white box (from the 60's I believe), so I asked him what he intended to do with it, and he replied "I'm gonna shoot it". OK, so I asked him if he was willing to swap out that old stuff for a brand new box, and he agreed. He also told me that he had a bunch of old ammo at home that he would be willing to do the same deal with. I followed him back to his house after our shooting session, collected a few bricks of different brand 22 LR ammo, some 45 acp, 38 spl. shot shells etc. all in pristine condition. I returned the next day with all new ammo to replace what I had taken from him. We were both happy campers, and that is how I started my vintage ammo collection.
