Who likes 44s more than 357s?

while i own other caliber handguns, the ones that get loved and shot are the 44's. i figure that i'll never need to make a bigger hole, and what's the point of makin a smaller one. the cartridge does everything that i need it to. and you can never have too many.

When I take revolvers to the range it's usually one of my 44 mags and occasionally a 44 Special. I like my 357 revolvers but they spend more time sitting around. Most of the time I take 1911's & 22lr handguns to the range.

Precisely! My last range outing.........a Colt Mark IV, Series 70 45ACP, a model 17, a Ruger Mark II Target 22 lr, and of course, my model 696.

Nothing like 7-8grs or unique in a 44 special shot out of my 624 3inch. Sure is fun.

I do.

I have just never had the need for a 357 Mag.

With the 44 Mag you can go from full power loads, to mild loads as easy to shoot as 38 Special wadcutters.

I have owned some 357 Mags, but just never had a use for them.

The one exception was a 2 1/2" Mod 19.

I bought it mainly for a "snub nose" to use in snub nosed revolver matches.

I did get lucky as it shot groups at 25 yards as good as any 6" custom PPC revolver I ever shot.

I did use it on duty for plain clothes assignments when I wanted a powerful, small revolver to use up close if I might be grappling with suspects, but If I still might need to make a hostage type or other precision type shot in a crowded place. It shot full power Mags very accurate as well.

And back then, S&W did not have "snubby" 44 Mags or 45 ACP's...

Very informative missives. Thanks for those that have posted both + and - opinions on the OP. Reminds me of a poignant piece, the "Rifleman's Creed."

"This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...

My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!'

I also prefer the .44 mag over .357s although the .41 mag has been my favorite the last ten years when I got that bug.

I've shot several deer with the .44 mag and they are quite effective at putting them down.

I sometimes carry .41 and .44 snubs concealed but mainly .38 and .357s so those will aways have a place too.

Count me in!

Count me in twice if you're talking 41 mag!

GEE!! 5 pages and no one mentioned 44-40!!! My favorate revolver cartridge. Sorry, mine is a Ruger Vaquero SS that has been fired thousands of rounds, from light 160 grain loads (750-800 fps or so), to full BP and equivalent nitro loads, true high velocity loads (1000 fps +) with 200 grain bullets, to 240 grain and 300 grain bear medicine loads loaded on low end of 44 Mag velocities.

This one had factory-installed cylinder with 0,430 throats -- bore is 0,429.

I guess I will be the odd one out: All I own are .38 specials and .357s. I have owned them all at one time or another over the years, but I think my 6" 14-2 is the sweetest shooting pistol I have ever had. For CCW, I either carry a 340PD or my 66-1. Just how I roll.

I find that I prefer to shoot the larger calibers and more powerful guns. I have one 38 special (M14) and have not shot it in years. I have three 357 magnums, but I prefer to shoot my 45 Colts.

"Who likes 44s more than 357s?"

I do but I have never had a .357 to compare it to.

I have 3 .38's and my Model 29 6 inch
