Who needs factory ammo?

Many impressive cost per round quotes.

I guess I'm doing it all wrong. My 200gr copper plated .45 ACP rounds run $21.45/100. Here's the breakdown...

Primers/100 = $3.70
Powder/100 = $1.75
Brass/100 = $4.00
Bullets/100 = $12.00

Here is my breakdown:

Primers/100 = $3.50
Powder/100 = $1.45
Brass = range pickups (9mm is always on the floor, 38 is harder to come by, but lasts many loads, once picked up.)
Bullets/100 = $2.00

This is for both 38 and 9mm

45 would run a little more due to more lead per bullet and more powder per bullet. Having to buy brass would up my cost as well as buying jacketed factory rounds.

Yes, I cast my own. This takes some time, but makes for less expensive ammo, and has taken me through the lean times this year.

And here is some of my ammo:

Well the brass cost will be down to nil vary quickly. 45acp cases last pretty much forever. The bullets seem kind of high also. What bullet are you using? But eaven so, your running just over 10 bucks for 50 rounds. Once the cost of brass has paid for itself your down to well under that. Being that I haven't seen a 50 count box of 45acp go for under 25 bucks in a long time, your a lot cheaper!

I envy you guys who can shoot cast lead. My range will not allow it so I have to go with plated which costs $8-$9/100 for 9mm and 38 and $15/100 for 45. If I buy jacketed bullets the cost becomes $20/100 for smaller and $25/100 for 45.

Where are you getting your plated 45? I recently bought Xtreme plated 230gr RN for $11.20/100 with their 15% discount. Even without the discount it would have been about $13/100. They have a 17% discount Black Friday through Monday.

Agree that .45 ACP brass can be reloaded more than once and I have some that has been fired over 6 times in 1911 type pistols. In the 1911s the wear occurs at the rim and base. I've noticed on once fired plastic fantastic brass the wear borders on damage... that brass is sent to the recycler.

Since replacement Grade 2 .45 ACP range pick-up brass in my neighborhood is going for $0.05 to $0.06 each plus shipping, I assigned a cost of $4.00 per hundred because it will have to be replaced sometime in the future.

As for the projectiles, they're 230 grain Plated Round Nose from X-treme. It turns out the price quoted of $12.00 per hundred is a sale price. The regular price including county tax is just over $14.00 per hundred.

Yeah, but they've been running the 15% discount since mid-October. Even though they say while supplies last, they keep adding more with the same discount. Fortunately, I'm in AZ so no tax.

I bought from Berry's before I knew a lot about X-Treme. I had good results from Berry's and the $2/100 difference wasn't important enough to make me change.

But I did get bunch of 9mm from X-Treme when it was 15% off and they shot fine.

And this 17% Black Friday discount weekend is an even better deal! Berry's better step up, huh?;)

My break down. Go to store, buy all ammo that I want and need. DONE! No time wasted, no need to 'feel like reloading today" no need to pay attention to every little thing,...etc...etc. Plenty of time left to do what I like as a posed to what I need.

To me it's agony. Like watching grass grow when all you want to do is play soccer on it. No thanks

Since you've made it clear you don't like reloading and seeing that this thread is in the "reloading" section of this forum, I can only presume that the only reason for you to post this is to:

A. Increase your post count
B. Are bored and can find nothing else to do
C. Trying to offend someone
or
D. All the above.

Keep presuming. None of the above.

It just shows up as "unread" on my cell phone. This means ALL UN READ posts are lumped together.

However I wasn't trying to insult. Grow some tougher skin (that's very mild insult) just giving my point of view but that doesn't mean it has to be sugar coated. We are adults. ..right?!?!

My skin is thick enough ;) I don't get offended by people who can't spell (you'll have to figure this one out). Don't think I agree with your last question/statement.

Ok lemme re phrase to your liking.

Oh my gosh guy! I dunno how you have the patience to sit down and reload for many hours. That must be so hard. .

There ya go. Rated E for everyone

And that's cool.

Do keep in mind though that those of us who do reload look at it quite differently than you. It is not time wasted, we have an excuse to hone our powers of concentration and look forward to the time spent as productive relaxation as opposed to it being a chore.

But do know that if you choose to come into the reloading forum and post in the manner you have, you appear to be insulting good people for no apparent reason. And cracking wise with an even more insulting "apology" only serves to make you look childish.

You've got a store that has "all the ammo that you need"? Wow!

You can afford to buy new, factory "all the ammo that you need"? Wow!

Sgt Lumpy

Yep. They have
22 @ $30/brick
9 @ $13/50
40 @ $16/50
45 @ $20/50
I don't buy a lot of 38 and 357. But they run around $22-30 /50

All the other ammo I buy online since they are not really sold locally.

5.45x39 @ $180/1080
7.62x39 @ $220/ 1000
7.62x54 @ $89/440
303 Brit @ $14/20

...

Those are very good prices for factory ammo, around here they would be sold out in no time and likely have limits per customer. What store is it?

This particular one is Tanners Sports Center, Jamieson Pa. Claytons and Surplus City have pretty good prices too. Sometimes there are limits on amount of purchase but not always.

Look at the pretty shiny bullets!:)

I came up with $5.45 a box as the cost of my handloaded 38 spls at
the current prices of components I use. This seems high to me as I
still have components that I bought some years ago when prices were
a lot lower. I just don't see myself paying $25 or more for a box of
38 spl plinking ammo. To each his own I guess. Handloading goes way
beyond just saving money though. I like the option it provides to
tailor a load specifically to your wants. Once you get used to loading
your ammo exactly as you want or need the very limited offerings of
factory ammo become even less attractive. I think most handloaders
feel as I do, that cost savings aside, they just prefer their own
handloads to factory loads.
