I've only owned a couple. My first was purchased new in the late '70s. I kept searching for the then-elusive Model 29. Then one afternoon, a cased Model 57 4" showed up at the LGS where I moonlighted. AhhhYup! Had to scratch that itch. She stayed around for awhile.
I still recall attending INDOOR night firing with a neighboring Dept. I had a center stall between officer firing their Model 58's with factory 210 JHP. YES! I did wear PLUGS AND MUFFS! I wish I had blinders too:) And I with my puny Python & Silvertips.
Last year I had to scratch that itch again.

She's not been fired much but each time I see her orignal owner, he ups the offer to buy her back! She's here to stay

I carried this model 58 as a LEO for 13 years.
We were in a couple of serious social encounters but the 41 cartridge did what it designed to do and we got home.
I left LE 45 years ago, and have seldom fired it since.
When I have, it feels like putting on a favorite old sweater.

It will go to my son when I go toes up.

Had a few over the years. Still have the first a 4 inch cased gun from 67-68. It did the job on a you bet your life...so it ain't going anywhere. Had a 1st year 58 NIB but someone wanted it a lot more than I needed it...got a new home. Also had a 1st year 3 digit Blackhawk...put it on the table at a gun show one day as eye candy with a ridiculous price... A word of caution Don't do this! Marlin 1894 which is a great shooter...Also had a 3 inch Lew Horton. Unfired...Sold it too...Eye candy #2... I've almost learned. I bought the 4 inch in Fairbanks when guiding. Wanted a 44...none available so bought the 41...It has done everything a 44 could be used for. Shot through a grizz and an Alaskan moose front to back and through a large cow elk. All pretty much DRT...esp grizz. I've also shot a couple deer with it. One a nice little 7 pointer running by at 10-12 ft. Flipped right over. So I have a thing for the 41 and even though mine has a bit of blue wear etc..It's staying here

i have three 58s and two 657s , by far my most accurate handguns. my son noticed this and is taking over one of each. he'll get them all soon enough.

I had a S&W 58 in the early 70's. A S&W 57 in the 2000;s. Currently have a different S&W 57 six inch and a Blackhawk.
Not shooting them much, but currently not shooting much of anything else either.

My Model 58 is my bear and big cat country gun. On the rare occasion I am out and about with a camera in an area where I might sort-of reasonably anticipate an encounter with such a critter that is what I carry. Loaded with Rhino Rollers. Would also be very effective against feral dogs or feral humans I expect.

My mountain country bear load is a 245 gr WFNGC bullet at about 1100 or so fps..it shoots through critters front to back lengthwise. I sold the mold a few years ago with partial payment of 500 bullets from a commercial maker...who I think has gone out of business. Had it made by H&G many years ago. They made great bullets too

Something about the .41 mag that has always drawn me in. Have a nickel 4" M57 a blued 6" and a 6" 657.
Picked up a couple hundred of the Starline .41 special brass a few years ago and shoot a lot of reduced loads these days.
Have three .44 mags, two .44 specials as well. Can't say the .41 is superior in any way other than odds are you won't run into another person shooting a .41 mag on range day while.44's are somewhat common.

The 41 Mag is an example of what happens when multiple people are involved with a project. As I recall, Elmer wanted a 210 Lead SWC @ 850 fps. By the time Remington got around to making the ammo it was almost 100 fps. Most of the ammo that I shoot in 41 Mags regularly is around 850 fps. If I want to bang steel out to 100 yds., 1000 fps shoots flatter. Past that I use full throttle loads. The 41 mag will shoot flatter than the 44 mag, but I don't notice the difference until I get out to 150 yds.
I live in Missouri, so I don't need Grizzly Bear protection. The 41 had worked great on whitetails for me.
The lack of variety of loads was a major problem for the market success of the 41 mag.
41 mags are examples of "bonus" guns for reloaders. Most sell a little cheaper than a 44 mag and because we make our own ammo, I don't care what the factories offer.

Hey Fellers, own several including a carbine, but shoot and carry regularly a mod 57 no dash I bought new when they came out. Carried all over the North West from Alaska to Mexico, killed a lot of game with it. For years it was a 215 hard cast flat nose and how ever much 2400 it took to get 1350 out of the 6in barrel. Now days I can't handle the recoil and load 8gr of Unique and the same bullet for about 900fps, still kills a down cow or bull just as well as it ever did, probably didn't need to go that fast to begin with but I was younger then and some of you know how goes... Back in the mid-70's, when I was with the Border Patrol, some of the US Marshal agents used the .41 caliber. I wish the BP would have switched to it, I always thought they were an easier weapon to control.....
