Who's gone through their gun safe lately?

Here in Florida we don't usually get long stretches of cold, inclement weather. This year, however, has been an exception- so I took advantage of staying indoors to empty out my gun safe and gun cabinet to wipe everything down and reorganize. I really need a bigger safe (surprise!), but I can make do. I like to make sure that at least once a year all of my modest collection (handguns, long guns, swords, knives, etc.) gets to see the light of day. Even though they are kept in the A/C (with desiccant bags), living near the coast can expose them to occasional salt air and moisture. I always clean and wax (Ren Wax) them before going into the safe/cabinet for any length of time. I also had a chance to go through my "bag o' holsters", sort out loose pistol magazines, organize speed loaders and moonclips, and gather up and label misc. gun parts. The best part of this exercise- getting to spend time with the herd and appreciate them. Anybody else?

Making the Rounds

I too just recently did this. Careful
wipe down with a quality synthetic
motor oil on cotton makeup remover
rounds, and carefully ran a bore
cleaning rod w/ oil patch through
the barrel bore.

I inventory my "collection" every year - wipe down, verify serial numbers and inspect (except for the 4-5 I shoot regularly). Never found rust or other issues - keep in gun vaults in climate controlled room. Ammo in sealed cans - no problems there either, after many years.

I get in there all the time. Most recently I tricked out an FN Browning Hi Power with a threaded barrel, extended safety and slide stop. This prompted me to take down, inspect, lube & wipe down a few others.
Now that you mention it, I think I will do a few more this evening.

Quality Oil

The same stuff you put in your engine?

Yep, just car, truck, vehicle Oil Full Synthetic
motor oil. I found out that synthetic oil
does not harden up over time and protects
very well from rust.

Cleaning old Bait Cast fishing reels and Fly
Fishing reels of hardened lube, re-lubing
and oiling with synthetic keeps them
trouble free for years.

Some samples of what I use. Just any
quality synthetic oil.

You do realize, of course, that motor oils do not have any rust preventatives in them like most gun oils do.

Me...I'll stick with using stuff that is specifically made for firearms. :D

Funny how so many guns at the bottom of the lake reappear. Do you think it's because ain't nobody gonna successfully pull that story off?

"I see you're a member of the SWCA. But you don't own any guns?"

You can't even fool Dr. Watson with that, never mind Sherlock Holmes.

I recently went through my handguns but not to clean them - HORRORS! :D

I was looking for a couple that I wanted to shoot.

I'll clean them all in February. And if I don't get that done there's always the following February.... ;)

Apparently I’m in the minority. I’m in my safe 3-5 times a week. I recently bout a second smaller safe (22gun). Still trying to decide how I want to split things up.

I must be getting old. Everything in my safe is a pre-lock, probably pinned and recessed relic of a past age or something even older Colts that my Dad left me. Just kidding, I legally sold all my guns years ago.

Haven't been in either gun safe recently, both are in my son's basement in another state. I was there a few month's ago and went through both safe's. I coat all my firearms with RIG, all was good. Weather around here has been cold lately so I have been keeping myself occupied by going through my shelves full of ammo taking a look at what I have. I have opened ammo can's only to find they have ammo in them I never knew I had. I collected milsurp firearm's and made sure I have ammo for everything I own. I came across some oddball caliber's that I have never fired. My son's would razz me about all the ammo I stockpiled. I told them they didn't seem have an issue with it when they were shooting it up!

I am fortunate to live in Florida, no basement, or garage, or attic. My gun safes are always in climate controlled at least 45 to 50 %.humidity. Good to go!

Once a year a wipe down with Ballistol keeps them like new.

My regiment is change the clocks, change the smoke detector batteries and wipe down everything in the safe. I’m in the safe multiple times a week but not everything gets shot frequently, so this makes sure everyone gets attention twice a year.

I was actually hoping for some wintery days so I could be forced to go through the safe, inspect and wipe down my guns. Been a real light winter here, had snow one night and it was gone the next afternoon. I always have to check the safe real hard before closing it. Worse when one of the black kitties get in there, you can't see them.
