Why a 1911....

An original stock 1911 or 1911A1 was designed to feed ball ammo. Modern commercial guns vary widely in quality; some will feed anything, others not so much.

A good gunsmith can make almost any 1911 hum perfectly with nearly any ammo.

For the home enthusiasts, I wrote an article in 2000 - "1911 Reliability Secrets." A larger version of it appeared in American Gunsmith in that year. These are the tricks that will make a 1911 as close to 100% reliable as possible. Most of these procedures can be done by anyone who is mechanically apt and is willing to devote some time and effort to doing them properly.

Check it out here:

1911s aren't for everybody. You need to be prepared to put time into it. Many need a few hundred rounds to break in. During this time you should be finding mags and ammo that work in yours, and learning how to maintain it (disassemble, clean, monitor parts, etc.). Once you know what works, you will be good to go, and maybe never look back. They can be very addictive! With that in mind, and having enjoyed 1911s for over a decade, my nightstand gun is a M&P Pro 9mm.
