Why are people shedding 9's?

These threads always start a holy war of sorts. Find a favorite pistol design in your favorite caliber, learn to shoot it safely and accurately, and have a coke and a smile.

I have a friend who sold all his 9mm's and now carries .40 s&w.
Recently, I've noticed that others are doing the same, and I just read on the "WTS" area of others doing the same.

Now, I understand that .40cal ammo is more readily available than 9mm at the moment, but that too appears to be changing.
Ballistically, there is not that much difference between the two, so is there something I'm missing?

Wasn't there a thead recently entitled "why is everyone going back to 9mm?"

Correct. I'm in Phoenix. While local LE is seems to be issuing .40, most allow like model arms in the other Big-3. Cabela's is FULL of LE trades in .40. I decided on the reasons I don't care for it way back when it debuted 25yrs ago. Nothing's changed for me.

Current carry is a full-size 9 with three times the on-board load of my alternate carry K-frame, LOL.

Last year, the ammo that was most available was 45 ACP and 30/06 here in Newnan. Everything else was gone. 22LR is still hard to find.

At the same time LEA's are "shedding" the .40 and going BACK to the 9mm!
It's a crazy world to be sure.
A top load .40 is superior to a top 9mm, and even a top .45ACP, so it should give a slightly greater chance of delivering Hammer of Thor like stopping power.
Personally, though I KNOW the .40 is superior to the 9mm, I find it hard to add an entire caliber to my lineup that fits between the 9mm and heavy .45ACP loads, or even better, heavy 10mm loads. The .40 isn't even cheaper to shoot than 10mm so why drop the cash on a .40 barrel for my 10mm stable?
But in a full-size frame, with the right chamber support, the .40 S&W can pump out in excess of 600 lb-ft...you have to move into .45 Super territory to best it.
