Why can't I find my Sport 2 using its serial number?

I'm trying to find information on my M&P 15 Sport 2 that I recently purchased. I entered my serial number on Smith & Wesson's serial search page, but it said that my serial number is not valid..... Am I missing something? The serial number is the two letters followed by five digits on the outside of the mag well, correct? Could anyone help me find information on my new rifle? I apologize if I sound quite ignorant. This is my first Smith & Wesson and my first AR-15.

What type of information are you trying to find? Did you purchase it new? If so, it was most likely built this year. They aren't collectable firearms, so shoot it and enjoy it.

I could be wrong but assumed the serial # research was for older or historical items and not necessarily for newer models.
If its just general info desired (especially if a gun wasn't purchased new) then contacting SW's customer service may help. Of course they are probably behind due to the volume if business but that would be my first stop.
