Why carry in Detroit?

In that same segment, they quoted the Detroit police chief telling people that they should get a permit and carry.

Chief Craig was chief in Portland, ME for a few years. He came from LAPD and when he was first Portland chief, he routinely denied applications for carry permits. He quickly (in his own words) learned that ME is a "shall issue" state and by "shall issue" they mean shall issue. After getting slapped down by the courts out there, he quickly became a pro 2A chief. He's brought that attitude with him to Detroit.

James and I graduated high school together and have kept in touch since. We've had a few conversations about his position of denying permits (which carried over from his LAPD days). He was surprised by the low level of crime when he got to Portland, and this too played a part in changing his mind on the matter.

Though she has some terrible ideas, like driving with her gun in her lap, stupid. It wont be there in an emergency stop or crash. Holster that gat. BTW is open carry legal in Detroit? Cuz that is what she is sporting.

Black females are the fastest growing concealed carry demographic. There are good reasons for this, given the over representation of minorities in high crime areas, and the traditional increased vulnerability of women in those areas.

One thing most shooters today are not aware of is that gun control was very much a civil rights issue as many southern states and jurisdictions made it harder for blacks to carry handguns for self protection. I still see the echoes of this in the form of high permit fees and training costs that make it more difficult for minorities, who are over represented in low socioeconomic status, to obtain concealed carry permits - over and above the issues with arrests being used as the new Jim Crow laws in some jurisdictions.

In that regard, one thing I notice at the local range here in NC is a subtle and sometimes not so subtle judging of minorities who show up at the range. That's not only morally wrong, it is massively counter productive from a 2A perspective.

I don't care whether shooters are:
- conservatives or liberals;
- legal immigrants or decedents of the Mayflower;
- male, female (or one of the recently added options that I find confusing);
- straight, homosexual, bisexual or poly;
- black, white, brown, yellow or red;
- rich or poor.

What I care about is that they are interested in shooting, whether for recreation, target practice, hunting, competition, or self defense.

We ALL need to feel that way as every shooter we make feel unwelcome and lose is a vote we lose in the 2A political fight.

AMEN

AMEN I see a parallel ...

Locally we had a "Fraternal Organization" that closed due to lack of funds.
Various factions and infighting had caused many members to leave.

The attitude of remaining members and officers was: "We didn't need them anyway."

This overlooked the fact that: EVERY MEMBER THAT LEFT TOOK HIS MONEY WITH HIM!

If was a sad/happy day when Chief James Craig left Cincinnati.

Sad in that in just a short time he had gained the trust and respect of the city and he was a strong supporter of CC and personal self defense and a friend to the 2A and we were losing him.

Happy in that he always wanted to serve in his hometown of Detroit and we were happy for him.

He's a good man.

Hehehe Run by nit wits the past 50 years...folks now CCW because the POPO be overwhelmed..... why...I even heard of a Honest to God CCW holder shooting and scooting because he didn't want a $60,000 lawyer bill... car jack went bad for the Jacker. Welcome to DE- Toilet.

FYI Open Carry is 100% legal anywhere in Michigan and you do NOT need a Concealed Pistol License.

Downside to not having a permit is that having a loaded firearm within the reach of the driver or occupant is considered Concealed, so if you rely on Open Carry you will need to lock your pistol up in a trunk or some area out of reach of the driver and any occupants. Note, carry openly on a motorcycle and under the Law that is considered Concealed Carry. Also note carrying concealed without a permit is a 5 year felony and these cases are usually not plea bargained down to a lesser offense.

End result is that here in Michigan those wanting to carry take the time to get a CPL. I also find it a bit surprising just how many of my neighbors and acquaintances have a CPL and carry routinely. Where I work the entire front office except for the Office Manager are armed and we aren't a firearms manufacturer, what we make is parts for Ford, FCA, and GM.

I was a cop in Detroit during the Murder Capitol days and you can be assured that a few times I had my gun in my lap, good idea or not. Same with working the Liberty City area of Miami-Dade after the 80’s riots. Just seemed like the prudent thing to do occasionally.

At least one, probably two of the FBI agents lost their primary weapons due to using the lap ready position when they forced Michael Platt off the road in rhe Miami FBI shootout.

Excellent point. The more RKBA people we have out there, regardless of ethnicity, the better off we are. I noticed some time ago that the cover of a Texas State Rifle Association magazine featured some black long range rifle competitors. TSRA gets it.

When it comes to lawfully carrying a firearm, always remember that when seconds count, the police are minutes away. It's sad that so many people simply do not understand or are unwilling to accept this simple reality.

Put another way, the people who say we have no need to be armed because we have police, almost always have a fire extinguisher in their home, even though they have a fire department in their community.
