Why do I want this nickel model 19, and how much should I pay?

I'm going to go against everyone else and bet that the gun has been bright Chromed, not Nickel. The color does not appear right for Nickel! There are two ways to settle this. First ask him to remove the Hogues and check for the large block N which will be stamped on the left rear of the grip frame. Or, second, have him send a photo of the serial number of the gun and the box label to confirm that the gun and box belong together and what does the label say the finish was when it left the factory? My money is on the box label says the gun was issued blued!

So far as value it is probably a $600-650 gun as-is for a shooter, assuming it is mechanically sound. Makes no difference if it is Chrome or Nickel! Take $150 off for worst case replace the hammer and trigger if the Gold bothers you that much. This will be cheaper than re-finishing them. Paint is easily removed from the sights using acetone or fingernail polish remover. Neither will damage the gun. I'm curious why you even mentioned this since it is such a minor thing.

I took a look at it today. Round butt. Grips are for a square butt. No N on the left flat. Finish is nicely done. Functions nicely. Rear sight looks stainless but the back and sides look bright chrome. He wants $600. I told him truthfully he may get that from someone, but that I couldn’t go that high, so I didn’t buy a revolver today.
Absent all of the problems, it looked good in person. I found myself wanting it more than I should have, lol.

I might buy it, but way less than $600!
I have replacement grips, hammers and triggers in my tool Box.
Gold hammer-triggers are great backup apocalypse supplies!

Silly question but did you check the Model # stamped on the inside of the frame where the yoke fits? It could be a stainless steel Model 66 that has been polished. (I did several in my younger days).

I would not be concerned about the trigger and hammer if the sideplate screws are not buggered up and the timing is ok. If it bugs you that much S&W replaced the trigger and hammer along with some other internal work on a old Model 10-6 LEO trade-in for a little over $100.00 including shipping a few years ago.

Likewise I would not be concerned about the finish if it is tight. Hard chrome and electroless nickel is superior to factory nickel imo.

In my area good used revolvers are very hard to come by, especially a no-lock S&W. Here you would be looking at $700.00+. I would wave 5 $100.00 bills in front of him.

If it is a true pimp gun, then it probably has not been fired much. Criminals do not go to the range as much as law abiding gun owners. Personally I don't like the gold, but would not let that stop me if the price is right, and the gun is either unfired, or low round count.

Pinned nickle 19 snub round but, I would jump on it in a heart beat for 400 or under. As far as the painted front sight, remove it, REALLY. Ever of lacquer paint thinner? Those grips though would have to go! Put some mother of pearl grips on it, and claim it was Huggy Bear's prop gun.

I am surprised at some of the reactions, so I guess most would turn down Elvis's gold plated snub 19 for the right price, and it IS ugly.

I agree for $400, I’d own it. But for $600, I can wait for something else to come along.
