Why do instructors bash gun brands?

The appearance of a gun is far more valuable.
Agreed, but we're talking about the situation where just showing a gun wasn't enough and a shot must be taken.

YMMV, but I cannot envision a situation in which I would have to shoot someone where shot placement would be possible.
No? Hmmm, maybe some practice would be valuable.

When we say "shot placement" we're not talking about trying to shoot a .05" group. Two shots within a fist of each other is what we're looking for. Those two shots need to be in the thoracic cavity (heart, lungs, spinal chord) to be really effective. Sure a shot in the pelvic bone will hurt, but it won't stop them from shooting back.

Yes, shot placement is possible.

If I'm far enough away that I can extend my arms and use the sights, I most likely won't need to shoot. If I have to shoot someone, it will be a few feet or less.
No encounters with bad guys happen at 7 yards? 5 yards? 3 yards? I can extend my arms at all those. Even if they are within "bad breath" distance, I can still place a shot in the thoracic while holding the gun at my hip.

Additionally, many firearms encounters occur in low light, where the sights can't even be seen.
There's a new invention, they're called night sights. They have tritium vials in them that glow in low light. Makes the sights easy to see.

Train all you want; it's good to have people like you around. The industry needs you.

Meanwhile, make sure you shoot some at very short range, from a retention position, where most civilian defensive shootings occur.

I am all about shooting at 7 yards when practicing. But, it is always good in my opinion to do some drawing and shooting up close where you don't extend your arms.

The shooting distance is an 'average' so some shooting at each extreme might be a good thing.

Sorry, a little OT.

Right! That was my point. A lot of instructors do know what they are talking about but people get offended and bent out of shape when their choice isn't what the instructor thinks is good.

I think so.

When there's guys like Hackathorn who is a fan of 1911s and works with Wilson Combat echoing the same thing as the guy in the video, maybe it's time to stop crying "bashing" and listen to what's being said within the context offered.
