Why does a Gun Forum need to be CHILD-friendly?

You all know we strive to run a clean, family-friendly forum.

I take a few minutes now and then and view some of the "wild west" gun boards where anything goes.
I have to wonder what image of gunowners in general is formed in the minds of the non-gun type people who are trying to sort out their feelings about acquiring a gun and learning to shoot.
I have to wonder how much fodder is gathered by the liberal media and anti gunners from those boards.
I have to wonder where people with very limited gun knowledge feel like they can go to get their questions answered, and perhaps to answer questions their children raise.

We have a responsibility.
Actually, we have many responsibilities concerning guns.
We are responsible for the image we project to our community, our nation, and our world. (we have people reading this board from over 180 countries of the world)
It is our resonsibilty to be a welcoming group that people would desire to be part of.

We are responsible for teaching the uninformed about all the aspects of gun ownership, and how closely linked to true freedom it really is.

Last, and most importantly, we are responsible for passing the heritage of freedom on to our heirs.
We should recruit the young, and teach them.
Talk's cheap.
Lead by example.
With the confusing and often revised signals our children receive from the media, the schools, and our government, it is more important than ever that they be guided in an accurate understanding of freedom, the Constitution, history, government & politics, and the rights and responsibilities of a free people.

This vid is worth watching.
As Charlton says- never forget that we are just ONE generation away from being a nation of subjects instead of free citizens.
Pass it on.

I think even more importantly the message should be sent to Movie and TV producers, writers, video games, etc. I know it will never happen but think about how much influence the "entertainment" industry influences children, be it guns, drugs, violence, sex whatever.

Outstanding! The sympathies so eloquently articulated by Mr. Heston cut across so many of the particular issues discussed in this forum, from political activism to responsible gun use and handling -- and hunting -- to the central role that the personal values of respect and honor play in character formation, that they are truly fundamental.

Kids don't emulate what you say, they emulate what you do.

Thank you, Lee, for posting this.

Oh yeah.
Bring me some o' that rainbow pie and free Bubble-Up.........
;)

NOT making fun of you, OCD.
Merely pointing out what a forlorn hope it is that the media would ever become a reformed prostitute.

I always thought ol' Merl said rainbow stew........

Mr. Heston was and is right, and so are you for trying to run a clean board. I appreciate it.:)

The problem for me is: (and I have transgressed before) Most of the continuous, most prolific posters develop long distance "friendships" via this forum. (I'm not really in that category). It's almost like a few people sitting on the porch shooting the bull with friends. In the mind boggling reality your shooting the bull with the world. I am a self diagnosed a kind of a jerk. I've learned to live with it. I'm kind of proud to be allowed to maintain a membership here.

The problem is with keyboard commandos. Most, but not all of them wouldn't have the guts to say things in person the same way they type it on a forum where they think they are anonymous.

Thanks Lee. I really appreciate having this board to come to where I know I won't find the offensive stuff that I see on others.

While not taking sides on this issue, I agree where children have access, there should be severe restraint but that restraint goes not only to content but to words used. A four letter word is a four letter word and most kids know them as well as the adults, if not better.

On the flip side, this is a gun forum and a dang nice one at that. I am a member of several and this is the nicest one I know of. A gun forum is a place for adults just as guns are adult toys. Adults in a living room can say what they please. Television and music the kids are exposed to has far worse things said than what is censored on here. But then why are kids here anyway? Are they planning on learning about guns so they can shoot up something? We are all adults here and some are just younger than others but most are at least 18 yrs of age.

If need be, there could be an adult section as there are in some other shooting forums where access is only made to adults. There, adults can be adults without worrying about words, pictures or content.

Just saying.

I like this forum just the way it is. sounds like you could start a new Adult Gun forum to meet your needs. I know a lot of Adults that have minds of Juveniles, Seen a few of them pop up here but they dont last long.... thank God

That is the MOST common defense I get when someone gets dinged for language-
"There's worse than that on TV!!"

Yep, that is correct- there is.
However, TV is not the gauge I use to set the standards for my life or this board. (May God forbid)
I actually find it a rather humorous defense, since on any given day that same member is willing to rant about the "lying, immoral media that is eroding the ethical fabric of our society.........."

I think you missed the point. I see you are Army and an LEO. Were you born with weapons training? If not, did you learn about firearms so you could "shoot up something"? I will assume you were trained, guided, and mentored throughout your younger days not only about safe gun handling, but straight living in general.
Most of us here were so guided, and should pass it on.

Lee,

Good comments in the original post. Family friendly is the key. It's perhaps one of the greatest changes that you've brought about, since assuming the role of owner. I like this forum and the people that it attracts. It's the key to it's continued growth, and contributes to the overall gun ownership attitudes, in general.

In short, the attitude presents gun owners and our 2nd Amendment rights in a more positive manner...

Too many people forget Childhood is simply a phase on the road to Adulthood, and too many kids today are picking up the wrong ideas as to what "Adult" really means. As one friend said about pornography "Why do they call it 'Adult Entertainment'?-I've always found it very childish and immature." And if we are to preserve the RKBA and the shooting sports it pays to remember that in this era of high divorce and illegtimacy rates that we non parents (I am one) will have to shoulder more of the burden of introducing the young to shooting and firearms.
At the risk of being called a prude (which I probably am) I find profanity and vulgarity repulsive and have a very low opinion of those who use it.

It's not God. "The name... is Dalton" (We know him as Handejector).
