Why I am happy I don't live in NY

I use to live in New Jersey about 10 miles from NYC. The city is a great place to vist but I would not like to live there. A lot to see and do but I was always happy to Cross the Hudson and get out of Dodge.

Now I live in Pennylvania in the boonies. I'll go to NYC to see a ball game once in a while but not that often anymore. The price of major league tickets is out of sight.

Frankly, it's getting old.

I earned every penny of my pension, and suffer ever day from the accumulation of bangs bumps and bruises I got while I was earning it. But I don't regret it, I loved the job and would have stayed on past my 20 if injuries didn't force me to retire.

As far as money goes, the job was not about money, I started off making $7,000 a year. I worked all the holidays that were part of my schedule. When we had a day off on a weekday we couldn't go anywhere if we were scheduled for court. We were expected to stay home near a phone on our day off waiting for a call to appear in court. If we got the call we got paid for going to court on our day off, if we weren't called we were stuck at home on our day off without any compensation. So even the few days off weren't our own time. I worked shift work and changed my hours every week. Try working 8AM to 4PM one week 4PM to midnight the next week and Midnight to 8AM the next. and we didn't get much time between shifts to adjust. If we finished a midnight Friday we had to come back in midnight Sunday. 20 years of changing every week will really screw you up, there was a study done that links changing shifts to a shorter life expectancy. Probably the reason we get that pension is they don't expect us to live long enough to collect it and if we do we won't live long enough to collect much of it.
The reason I was able to buy a house in NY and sell it to buy a house in SC was I worked two jobs. Working two jobs probably didn't help my health either. So whatever I have here in SC was earned from working an extra job and I would gladly give back most of the pension I have if I could trade it to get my health back. I wouldn't exactly call my situation living in comfort, my body is so mucked up that I have to deal with constant pain, I wouldn't call that retiring in comfort. By the way I know a lot of cops that never lived long enough to collect a penny of that generous pension you speak of.
Some people look at others that have managed to acquire nice things and think it would be great to have those things, but what they don't consider is all the stuff the person had to go through to get it.

When I first started as a cop I couldn't believe they were paying me to do something I loved to do, it was a job I looked forward to going to, and even thought I got my share of getting banged up I accepted it as part of the job. I know Suffolk cops make a lot of money with a lot of benefits now but as I mentioned money wasn't the reason I became a cop I sure as heck could have made more money elsewhere and maybe I would not be so much of a physical wreck today.

I don't begrudge anyone on this forum that has been able to earn a good living because I know how much work it takes to earn it. But don't start counting the money in my wallet because I earned every penny of it.
The funny thing is even knowing the price I paid in the pain I suffer from every day, and the holiday gatherings I missed, parties I missed and failed relationships because some woman wouldn't accept the fact that you couldn't be with them on Christmas or other important days, I would still do it all over again.

And even thought the cops today probably earn more than I can dream of, have more days off, don't have to change hours every week, have better equipment (we didn't have bullet resistance vests back when I started and in the summer time the cars weren't air conditioned, in the summer it got so hot we couldn't sit in the car, we would park under a tree open all 4 doors and stand outside the car for a few minutes to cool down) I don't begrudge the new guys they because they earn it. But I don't apologize for my pension because I earned it

PS I object to you calling me a legend in my mind, and being untruthful, personal attacks are not allowed

To say nothing of the generous NY State pension, which he wouldn't have gotten in SC(I know, I'm also getting a very nice NY pension). And you sell your "shack" up here and buy the Ponderosa in SC.
I don't begrudge anyone doing well, but don't trash the place that allowed you to retire in comfort.

Well since you mentioned it, in the political Forum you said "I was stuck living in NY where normal capacity AR's were not allowed unless you found a pre-band version". That statement is NOT true. AR's have ALWAYS been available in NY, maybe not the version you want, but they have been for sale and continue to be for sale. Maybe your definition of an AR is a flash hider and collapsible stock, but my post ban will shoot just as well as any AR you can buy off the shelf in your so-called free State.
That's how false interner rumors get started, and gullible people believe it.
Or were you just referring to magazines?
Not trying to play gotcha here but, your statement was incorrect.
Can I buy a new AR in NY with a 30 round magazine? If I can buy a new AR with a 30 magazine then I will admit I was wrong

My tag line "some people are legends in their own minds" has been there for at least 6 months now, don't understand where it became personal towards you.
icon_confused.gif

I can buy a new AR and in the same shop buy all the 30rd mags I want, though 30rounders are not my preference.I prefer 10 or 20 rd mags. Do they ship with the gun? No, but the hi-caps sit 6 feet away from the new AR's if you want them. Admittedly finding an AR can be a problem nowadays, but it's a nationwide issue not just one specific to any one state.
Buying a new AR with any mag is/was as easy as buying a Ruger 10/22 up until Nov.

I thought it was directed toward me, most people separate their tag line with something like this **************** or this ++++++++++, or this=================, or change their tag line to a different color. Yours appeared as if it was part of your post

PS I bought an FN 5.7 when I was in NY and all the had were substandard 10 round mags, I couldn't buy normal 20 round capacity round till I went outside NY, I assume the same holds true for thirty round mags because every on line site clearly states they will not ship to NY.

I also tried to but a black powder revolver when I lived in NY but Midway refuses to ship to NY, I had to wait till I moved and have mine shipped to my new address.

If someone in NY is selling 30 rounders I have my doubts if they are within the law because ever on line sellers refuses to ship to NY. I would rather that you not name the place where you are buying 30 round mags because I suspect they could get in trouble for it, I'll just take your word you can buy them but I have my doubts about them being legal.

Well, if you take a minute or two to see my posting history, you'll see that it's been part of my tag line for awhile.
Or you can just make assumptions.
In any event, I'm done with this particular thread.
But anyone bashing/trashing NYer's will be met with resistance. I'm tired of it, it's old news, we know some don't like NY. We get it already. Sorry I don't live in a perfect State like some of the others here. I'm just a regular guy doing the best I can in an imperfect State.
Pardon me I need to go take my meds now.

PS 30 rd mags ARE legal to own in NY. The shops have them on display, no one is hiding anything, there's no reason to hide them.
Life, to me anyways, is more than just about guns and mags(or who doesn't ship to NY). I don't lose any sleep knowing that a company won't ship a lousy 30 rd mag to NY. So what?
I've got more guns and mags and ammo than I'll ever need.
Want hi-cap mags? Call Collector Rifle and Ammo at 845-227-4100. They'll be more than happy to ship them. IT'S LEGAL.
Out of state merchants don't want to ship to NY and other States because they don't want to deal with complex laws.Just because some merchants don't want to ship an item to NY, Mass, Cali or somewhere else does not mean the item is illegal. Any mags manufactured pre 1994 are OK to possess in NY, no matter the capacity. Some places such as NYC may have their own regs, it does not concern me as I don't live there anymore.
I wish people knew what the heck they were talking about(especially LEO's) before spreading falsehoods.

As a New Yorker myself, many people have asked me why I stay. One of the biggest reasons is my family and my job. I have a good job, with good seniority, and a good pension. Plus living in the Adirondack Mountains is probably about as close to nature as one can get, at least for me. I have been all over this country, to at least 30 states, and I keep coming back every time. Most people think of New York, and of course they instantly put the whole state in the same class as New York City. I used to travel to NYC at least 3 times a week, and if you have never been there, you're not missing anything. You can smell it before you see it. Its a dump. But people who have never been to this state, think of that place before they ever consider there is the rest of the state. And they think we all act the same way too. Believe me, us folks from upstate NY (or to anyone in the Albany area, northern NYers), we have the same opinion of the majority of NYC that the rest of you from outside the state do. I liked the whole premise of Escape from New York. Wall the whole thing off and don't let them out.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

I'm four years in to a thirty-year government pension. My wife has a solid job with the local university. We're buying a house this year (we hope).

Lest everyone think that all of NY real estate is screwed up, we're buying a 1300sf 3br/2ba ranch with a full walk out basement for me to finish ... on 5 acres. State land is a ten-minute walk from the back property line. Deer and turkey are abundant. I can literally walk out my back door and hunt. There's a bow shooting club a mile up the road one direction and a public golf course a mile the other. It's a 25-minute drive to work, or fifteen to the 24/7 supermarkets and the home improvement stores. Five minutes to the mom'n'pop in the village. Private well flowing 12gpm of the best water I've ever tasted. Annual taxes around 3k.

It may not be a mansion, but it'll sure as hell be our home... and it's in NY. And you know what? NY is HOME.

I have a house bought and paid for in western NY state. Can't wait to retire from this ****hole state and move back home. Yes, I'll have to register my revolvers, and I'll probably sell my AK, but I really doubt I'll need it anyway. Give me the Finger Lakes anyday.

I was always told to take the pension and run (you know, 20 or 25 and out) to a place where the cost of living was less for housing, taxes and the like and the climate was more moderate. I followed that advice and one son already has also, but without those generous pension benefits from NYC (compared to what is given down here)it would have been more difficult. Thank you, New York! I also know many who enjoy all four seasons and went further upstate or to PA.

Lots of on-line merchandisers won't ship certain items to NY (or MA or CA,,etc). Sometimes it's for a perfectly good legal reason, but more often than not it's a misconception of the current law. That and the abundant local laws make it much easier to just say no.

I can't get AIM Surplus to ship me a used, non C&R handgun even though I have an 01FFL and a NYS Handgun Dealers License. Their reason is that none of theirs has the 'fired shell casing' included needed for the NYS Ballistic FingerPrinting System. Tried to explain it was only for new pistols and if not included w/a new gun it was the NYS dealers responsibility to have it test fired before sale,,but,,sorry,,no sales to NY.
They won't sell a C&R handgun with a hi-cap mag clearly made before 1994 to NY. They err on the side of 'no hi-cap mags to NY'.

It's just their way and the way of a lot of sellers to avoid wading through the mass of laws here and other states.

The gunshows and shops are usually full of hicap AK and AR mags. Maybe not so much now as the recent run in such stuff.

I still haven't ever owned either

I guess the M1 Carbine will have to do. Plenty of 15 & 30rd'rs around for that.

Get the politicians the hell out of here and this would be a really nice place. Most of them are just passing through anyway to a job in DC.
OBTW, I was so glad to hear that Chucky Shummer has a CCW permit for NYC. He being so much more important than the denied unwashed masses and all.

L13 I do hope that you have more than you will ever use...I intend to use some for barter and whatever comes up. You can never have too much .22 or .762X39.

SC,

If you want to complain about NY, go ahead. As long as it doesn't bother Lee, I don't see a problem with it.

ladder13, and others,

If you don't like reading SC's posts about NY,

DON'T READ 'EM.

Besides, I like to see Yankees argue!

My best friend works for Microsoft on Long Island. He absolutely hates it. He couldn't find even a hovel for a decent price and couldn't even find a decent apartment. His wife is still in Delaware at their real home. He's moving to Redmond at the first opportunity.

I know how you feel. I was born in Chicago and lived there until I went to college and joined the Army. I had no idea what the real United States was like until I moved away. I can't stand the place and go back only once a year to see my elderly mother at Christmas. I always laugh when my relatives ask if my guns are "registered". I had fun at Christmas dinner explaining concealed carry to them. It was like explaining "plaid" to a blind man.

People who learn to deal with these idiotic laws sometimes just don't understand that other people just don't want to be bothered, and in fact consider the hassles to more than outweigh any possible monetary benefit.

I've totally failed to get somebody on another forum to understand that I simply won't take a gun to Illinois because it's not worth it to me to go to court to be proven "right" in a place where I don't want to be in the first place.

What part of LI, I sold my place in Hauppauge but still have the house in Huntington my mother lives in. I started going back Thanksgiving and Christmas but hated the cold. One of the main reasons I left was to get away from the cold so it was silly to go back at the coldest time of the year. From now on it is once a year in the summer

Well, silver...

Judging from some of the pictures you've posted...your house in South Carolina, your two Corvettes on a rack lift, your full-auto Thompson, not to mention about every fifth post from you is about your latest firearms acquisition...

I'd have to say it looks like New York has treated you pretty well....looks like you've done OK to me.

So...bash away.

You think it's fun for those of us who have to listen to the New Yorkers constanting bitching about Florida? BTW, "you're doing it wrong and this is how we do it back home" gets a little old too.

Directions to I95 north are there for the asking.

The office is in Hauppauge. I think he lives in the same general area.

He grew up in Saint Louis, then rural Missouri near Six Flags, a "town" called Catawissa. He's been a smallbore rifle competitor and (until he moved to NYC) a cowboy action shooter. He has to drive back to Delaware to shoot and hates it. He doesn't have a gun, and I certainly wouldn't live in NYC or Chicago without a gun, hence I live in neither place.

I've never lived any place that didn't have a brutal winter (including Kentucky), so weather's pretty much irrelevant to me. I was laid off in February, so I may have to move. When I go online to look for jobs, I don't even stop at listings with "CA", "IL", "NJ" or "NY" on them. I'd rather live in the Cleveland Metroparks and poach deer.

People who equate NYC to the rest of NY are idiots, plain and simple. They need a lesson in geography.
Makes me wonder about our educational system.

I didn't think your were that petty and jealous, I worked hard for every penny I earned, most of the time I put in 60 hours a week minimum. I don't have time to defend myself for working hard I have to go out and buy another gun

You have nothing that makes me jealous.

The only thing that is petty is your constant New York bashing.

You're gone...New York doesn't miss you...glad our tax dollars are still supporting your lifestyle.
