Why I don't Open Carry

I referee high school soccer. Had a game the other night and stopped into the Mickey D's adjacent to the pitch to use the restroom and grab something to go for my 40 mile trip home. Open carry is legal in that city. Entered and immediately spotted a fellow with a Hi Point in a cross draw. Did my business and ordered, stood around waiting for food. The man came to the counter to get a drink refill and stood there. The visiting girls soccer team came in shortly after and filled the lobby, along with several parents. Dude still standing there when I left about ten minutes later. Nobody noticed, and if they did, nobody cared. I certainly didn't, although some on this forum might have taken issue with the man's appearance and apparent level of intelligence . . .

The only issue I can see is that he was carrying a Hi Point!

Eh... I don't judge. Out loud. ;)

But seriously, I'd have paid it no heed as long as he wasn't acting twitchy and using a retention holster.

A while back, I had a co-worker of very meager means ask me for a recommendation on a shotgun for home defense. I told him he couldn't go wrong with a Remington 870, but to try and save up for the Police model. He bought the bare-bones Express instead. I figured: "Well, it certainly beats nothing."

That guy who bought the Hi-Point may have questionable tastes, or he may really just be poor. Maybe he bought a Hi-Point because it was his only option until he could save up for something nicer.

I try my damnedest not to judge people. I look back at all the times I did when I lacked the wisdom I have now and, frankly, sometimes want to punch that younger version of me for being so arrogant.

That was me a few years ago...in college, working at the family business for no pay...

I got a Hi-point 9 for $50........shot probably 1000 through it in 3 years, not 1 problem.....

Now that I'm out of school and working, I carry a S&W

You illustrate my point perfectly. :) A Hi-Point is arguably not the "best" choice, but there are times when it's someone's only choice, and I'd never hold that against them if it means the difference between possessing the means to protect themselves or being an unarmed victim.

Also, good on you for obtaining a S&W.
