I just remembered a District Judge we had here years ago (He's retired and I don't think I should name him). He was truly LAW AND ORDER. If he didn't think prosecutors were handling their case well, he reamed them. Same for defense if he thought they were trying to put up smoke screens. We noticed that if he had a defendant found guilty that was a smart arse or tried anything snarky in his court, he would alter his/her sentence. If guidelines called for 10 years, he would pronounce sentence (For example) of 9 years, 220 days, 13 hours, 14minutes. We thought that it was to make the convicted thing about how much time that really was. One officer finally asked him if that was the reason. It wasn't. Under Texas sentencing guidelines at the time, if your sentence wasn't a round number (10 years, for instance) THE CONVICTED WAS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TIME OFF FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR. Sometimes, I miss the good old days.
