I'm looking for a 686+ ideally a pre-lock and saw this on GB. It's a 686-6.

Smith & Wesson 686-6 357 Mag 38 S&W Sp 3" Beauty ! : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Why so much? Curious. I love it but over 1k? Sounds real steep.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the heads up.

That price is nuts. It seems people pay a premium for polished SS over the original finish as well. Not sure why. Maybe they look better? but it takes away from the originality no? I can get the same revolver new on GB even for a couple hundred less.

I checked on one a few months back, Buds had them for a hair over $700 Brand New.

With O'Boobas Gun Sale going on, I am sure the price is creeping up on GB. When I checked the new price on one, I was bidding on a 3" 686-6 that was a 6 Shooter. The Product Code was for a Police Distributor Model. I went up to $700 on it, and let the other bidder have it. I probably should have set my maximum another $50 higher.
Someone on S&W Forum was talking about a friend getting it, so it went to a good home anyway.

My Story went well, I soon found a 66-2 w/3" Barrel that was a Custom Shop Gun for $600. It went home with me along with a 4" 686-5 that I have made into a Super SSR Gun with the help of Ron Power.

Yep see that kind of insanity a lot nowadays, esp on regular items. People still continue to panic and believe their item is rare or something unique and set the prices high. It gets annoying see the same items constantly for sale at a high price though.

GunBroker Madness

Mid-2012 I watched a M29-3 blue, 4" barrel finally sell for $1200 in a mad bidding battle. Just the revolver, very nice condition, slight turn line, and no box or docs.

Six weeks later an identical M29 with box, presentation case, and all docs, tools, paper had no bidders for 5 days. I put in my max bid and got it 2 days later for $850 delivered to my LGS. I bought it because it was "cheap" compared to the previous auction. It is no longer unfired :D .

On my local boards 686's are in the 500 - 700 range, depending on barrel length, dash, condition, and +/no +. The 686 is a fantastic revolver, but there are A LOT out there, and they are still being made. Unless its specialized, paying more that 700 is too high for a used one.

I can't explain why the price could go so high.

It becomes tiresome going to GB and see common guns with ridiculously high prices.

I would never pay $1000 for a standard 686.

I think my brand new one (2012) was just a little over $700.

I have been following them on G-broker. 686 no dash 2 1'2" is common for $1000+ these days.
In the last 6-8 months I bought 2 $480, and $500 both LNIB and was looking for a third but MAN not at those prices.

Because, right now, GBroker is NOT your friend.

Yeah, capitalism is a wonderful thing, anyone can sell for what they can get, anyone can buy for what they feel is reasonable but...imo, there's LOTS of folks out there now who are looking to get rich quick on the new and uninitiated shooters. Good for THEIR wallet, bad for folks who could be longer term allies to the shooting cause. Not only standard non rare models, but ammo too these days.

On your 686. They're great models, one of my faves. But you do know that the -6 is a locker right? Last non lock variant is the -5. I own both types, not into the whole "hole or not" issue, but you did indicate that you were looking for a prelock. So...just sayin.

Found mine locally

Was just at my LGS, they have a new 686 6" in stock for $700.00. Last month I got a new 686+ 3" for $739.00 (there were 2 available at that time). They are not always in stock, but the LGS seems to get them on a regular basis. It does seem silly that prices can go so high for some of them on GB, but I guess if people either want a very specific version/configuration or can't find them locally then they have to compete with others at auction.

P.S. I learned by looking at GB that my 3" is very rare! :)

Yea I know, which is why I am even more surprised at the price. I have mostly prelock and have a tough time with patience sometimes. Although I did wait for 2 years to find my 625-4 3" NIB.

I guess some people are just willing to pay a few hundred more to get something they really want.

Can't say I've never done that myself.

I wouldn't pay that for a 686-4 Plus 3" and that's a gun on my bucket list. Heck for a grand you could get a gently used 627 PC.

So what's your problem? I was at an auction a while back when someone paid $25 for a case of outdated peanut butter. Ridiculous, but what did I care? I wasn't going to bid on it...

Someone has gone nuts over something at every auction I have ever been to.

It's great to be a seller right now that's for sure. If both the buyer and seller walk away happy, who cares what the price is? I agree unless I'm the bidder that lost...
