Why so little interest in hunting on the forum?

When a banjo playing shoeless and toothless mammy Yokum can get her meals courtesy of the Super Walmart just down the road a piece from her sugar shack, what's the point of hunting? The advent of a supermarket in every hamlet came on the heels of a chicken in every pot and a car in every back yard. Hunting for food is oh so passe; hunting for trophies is for 1 percenters. :)

I love to hunt.......................for the next pistol I'm gonna purchase.

I wasn't raised to be a hunter. My father hunted small game but never took me or even showed me how to handle a firearm. I would like to have been a bird or small game hunter, but now with the physical limitations I can't walk across the grass let alone a field or some wooded area.

I'll just settle for hunting those bargain deals for S&W wheelies and semis. :)

Then the Creeks gave up trying to build mounds in Oklahoma and switched to building Turnpikes.

Yes, and to my chagrin my Oklahoma bretheren extract copious amounts of coin for passage. Even a card carrying member of the Miccosukee must cough up the required tribute for passage. My momma always said we Lower Creeks were more of less viewed as the "Jeffersons" of the Creek Confederacy- I even have to pay full freight at our Hotel/Casios. Go figure

Hunting

I would not buy any meat at Wal-Mart personly , When I do I go to a farm that sells beef that is grass fed . My story Thanks OldSeabee

If'n I happen across a turkey while check the stock.....

Any y'all got a good recipe for fryin one in a skillet?
.

Ingredients

* 1 pound bacon, diced into 1/4-inch pieces
* Cajun poultry seasoning, as needed ( I used Tony Chachere's)
* 4 tablespoons butter or margarine, divided
* 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
* 1 (2-pound) boneless turkey breast, cut into 1-inch chunks
* 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
* 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

In a large bowl, combine turkey, 2 tablespoons of oil, Worcestershire sauce and Cajun seasoning to taste. Mix it together well to get a good coating on all the pieces.

In a large, heavy skillet, add bacon and sprinkle with Cajun seasoning, Fry until crisp. Drain, discard grease and set aside.

In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter, and sauté the chopped onion until tender.

Add Remaining butter and oil, then add turkey and bacon. Sauté until turkey is brown and tender. Serve entree over rice.

I love the "outdoors"... hunting/fishing/shooting/walking/working..... Even made a website for Mississippi deer hunters to converse.. I hunt anything that moves & is legal. These last couple years, I have gotten back into small game hunting (mainly squirrel) because my son enjoys it so much.

I can honestly say, I have not bought ground meat or steaks in probably 10 years or so. My family eats about 3-4 deer a year. The wife has to have her "cow steak" when grilling, but she does eat/like the ground-venison. My kids can't stand "cow steak".... They like "bambi" they say..

Like some others have said, I'm not as "mad at those deer as I used to be". I've been fortunate over the years to harvest some fine deer. I've got 7 or 8 heads on the wall, I don't need anymore. It will have to be a sure enough trophy to mount another.

Turkey tend to make a fool of me :( I may get lucky & find a dumb one every now & then..

Going on my first elk hunt this fall ! (I'm stoked)

Hunted for fifty years. Squirrels, rabbits, quail, pheasants, geese, deer and groundhogs for sport and to help the soybean farmers. I had 300 acres of private land and over 2,000 acres of national forest adjoining the privately owned land. I enjoyed getting out and away from the crowd and noise more than anything. I finally reached the point where I decided I just didn't need to kill an animal for food anymore. Nothing wrong with that of course, just not for me anymore. I still enjoy getting out and enjoy the solitude and quietness of the woods. Good for the mind and soul and sorting things out.

I love it,
But the hunter in south Texas has become a culler for the trophy deer properties. High fence, biologists, whitetail and exotic management. Shooting feral hogs out of a chopper and spikes irregulars and does out of a truck.
But sitting at a fire in the brush country....heaven.

I only hunt animals with a camera. If we had the feral hogs here I might go and knock some off to protect somebody's crops. It would make a change from punching paper with a rifle.

We do have a coyote problem here although the state wildlife folk are very coy about discussing it on record. They are believed to be largely responsible for the big reduction in bird, reptile and small mammal populations.

The problem is we have too many here who think coyotes are cute and another hard core who are happy they are killing the other mammals, including mice. These types only get the message when they come across one eating their pet in the backyard or are confronted by an aggressive one on a walking trail in their neighbourhood.

There are people here who actively hunt coyotes but like somebody else said, it usually involves getting up early. Bag that noise. Add to that you have to be either very good at calling them or be a really good marksman because of the distances out here. Nevada can also be funny about what calibers you may use to hunt, although I'm not sure if that applies to varmints.

I simply don't like hunting, I cannot shoot animals. When I grew up one of my uncles was a hunter and he took me with to some trips. I liked his rifle, his truck and his dog, but not the hunting part. That's it. I don't even look at the brag photos in gun magazines. On top of that, throphy hunting to me is just disgusting and wrong!

Remember you are now on a sanitized family friendly board. With the prior admin, there were groups of hunters that posted often. The hand gun hog hunters got lots of play. Some of their threads were pretty wooly. There were also frequent thds with pics of long gun hunt activities.

It seems that harvesting, dressing, and consuming the bounty of this beautiful country is not popular here any longer. Most of the hunters have gone to more bountiful places.

No editorial intended or implied. Just my observations.
Incorrect.

You won't find any negativity toward hunting from the admin or staff of this board.
We do desire a family friendly atmosphere because our children are the future for gun rights. I have hunted for more than 50 years, and my children were shooting and hunting before they were very far into grade school.
Ethical hunting is a sport that benefits all who are fortunate enough to have been taught it.

One of our Mods has posted his antelope hunts-
Antelope anyone? (pics on pg 2)

So, to be clear, discussion of legal and ethical hunting will never be discouraged here.

I'm proud to be a lifelong hunter.
And I combine that with my enjoyment of S&W's and a few other handguns, as that is what I usually hunt with.

I have a very modest interest in hunting that's tempered by:

  • game laws in Ohio which limit me to shotgun, handgun, black powder or bow. I have a TOTAL disinterest in bow, shotgun and black powder hunting. My preference would be rifle.
  • my complete disinclination to hunt crowded public land.
  • my job, which affords me NO vacation at all.
If I can get a real job some time in the near future, I plan to go hunting again on my best friend from college's family farm outside of St. Louis. We actually talked about it a couple of days ago. It's great hunting land, and being privately owned and posted, we don't have to worry about dubious characters with poor judgment. Plus we plan to shoot some coyotes since the place is thick with them and they prey on game and livestock in the area.

How long of a shot are you willing to take when handgun hunting? Always hear about people doing it but never been willing to try it myself. I'll stick with my bow or my rifle. Plus, don't really have a handgun that's suited for it.
