Why this ammo shortage has now made me mad.

I hope you all can forgive me for venting some on here about the 22 ammo shortage. I guess when I get to the root of it, I am just feelng sorry formyself. But I also know I am not alone in this situation.

What gets me fired up is hearing of so many people who are "stocking up" on 22 ammo, but are really hording it and don't care to leave some for the rest of us. I have heard of people with thousands, even tens of thousands of runds of 22 and brag about it. Here comes the pitty party. To me this is not fair at all. I can't always get to stores to check stock due to health issues. I am not always up to it. (I am 47 and been disabled for 7 years.) Or I don't always have the money to buy it if I found it. There are others in a simaler situation to me. Or they are busy working to go running aorund trying to find ammo. I have 2 22 guns, and a down to 150 rounds of 22. I know others that have none. While others have way more than they need. There are times that I don't go shooting becuase I am so low on ammo. And I know others do the same. It is just not right. Some are being so selfish. I don't need or want thousands of rounds. Couldn't afford that much anyways. But s it to much to wish for a brick or two? I do believe that between the goverment and the hoarders, that is where a lot of it is going. That and some 22's that have come out over the past couple of years has inceased the demand becuase they are awesome guns and lots of fun to shoot. I have wanted a new 22 for a while and finally saved enough for it. But when I was looking at it the other day, I thought, why bother? I can't shoot it.

I know posting this will not change anything. But it can help me get it off my chest and vent a little. And maybe help others to vent some too and know we are not the only ones bothered by this. They say there is comfort in numbers.

Well thanks for letting me vent. If you feel the same way, chime in. Or maybe you just want to tell me I am a jerk. Whatever makes you happy.

I'm not knocking other peoples hobbies, but it does appear to be allot of collecting, photographing and sharing the photos of their ammo collection. Like you said, I've seen some that are tens of thousands. I had a beer can collection when I was young. These hobbies, like the beer can collection will pass with time.

If I were you, I would not buy a 22lr gun of any kind. I'm not a gambler, but I would bet that it will be at least 2016 before the shelves are stocked with 22s. I'm talking stocked like you can go to the store and choose what brand and type of 22 ammo you want to buy. You might find a box here or there in 2015, but I wouldn't bet on it. There is no way this ammo grab is going to end in 2014. Just my opinion.

I bought a brick of thunderbolts from Cabellas last week for $21.99 with $5 shipping. Good luck, and remember that there are alot of people in the same boat.

Been in the same boat. The Gunbot website is a great resource. Also, check out Cabelas multiple times a day if you think about it. Their inventory updates almost real time and they do still sell bricks at a reasonable price.

Also, keep an eye out on Cabela's website. I check their .22LR ammo inventory every day and have managed to find a couple of decent deals so far.
1st was a 500 round brick of Remington Thunderbolt for $23.99 and 2nd was a 500 round brick of CCI Blazer for $27.99.
To my house, shipping is usually only about $5.00 so, it's worth it to me.

To me, all that means is you aren't trying hard enough using the resources available. All one has to do is watch the ammo thread here & 22lr pops up all the time. Folks here have gotten tons of relatively cheap ammo from Cabelas lately. Plenty other links have been posted also.

I dont consider myself a hoarder of ammo. However I do buy calibers I need/use whenever I see it available and have the expendable funds to afford it. Trust me there are many a times I see it but funds arent there so I wait till next time and hope Ill have cashola then. Yes I keep a smallish (by some standards) stash. However I dont see it as hoarding as I have done so my entire adult life while owning firearms. I see no reason to have a gun in the house if I have no ammo to go with it. May as well just get a bat or club. Coming on here or any other forum and whining about it like a little girl isnt going to change anything. It is a fact of the way it is these days and the best way Ive seen to deal with it is adopt the "buy it when I see it plan". This weeks buy was. 100 rd WWB of 38fmj. Did I "need" um not really but the $ was right I had the free funds and it is one of the calibers I own and one I do not have a large stock pile of so I brought it home tossed it in the collection and will see what is the next"flavor of the week"

I have a small stock pile of 762x39 40cal 38/357 12ga 20ga 308 30-30 and even 22lr. All guns I own and on occasion (some more than others) like to shoot.

I say if you find it and can afford it buy it. Other wise sell the firearm or stop whining.

22LR ammo is hit or miss now and sometimes when you do see it it's grossly over priced. So you need to make an extra effort to find it and then be willing to pay for it if it's high priced but not to the gouging level. I think the days of 4 cents a round are gone forever so you need to establish a new normal price like 6, 8 , or even 10 cents a round.

I have what I need. But when I see 22lr ammo I buy it, not for me but for my friends. I know who the flippers are around where I live. I buy to keep them from making a profit, not to hoard. I don't go around town looking for 22, just when I'm in the stores that sell it(Academy, Bass pro, Wal-Mart) etc.

Same here. Last month I jumped on the Cabelas offerings of Blazer & M-22. Not because I needed it, as I shoot sub-sonics & have plenty, but so as to supply friends that don't sit in front of a computer all day, as I mostly do. Just last week I supplied a friend with 3000 rounds of the above & charged exactly what I paid.

And I too have adjusted my baseline for cheap 22lr. Nowadays, if I can get it for .06 or so... that is cheap. I will, and do pay up to .11 for case lots of the good subsonic, as I shoot a LOT of it & don't want to spend time hunting for a brick at a time. Even at that pricing, that is a whole lot more bang bang than if I were shooting .223.

Re: OP. There is no need to forgive. You've offended no one. When it comes to trying to find shootable quantities of .22 LR ammo, you are not alone.

Flippers of .22 LR ammo the bain of our sport. They are akin to folks who jack up the price of plywood, gas, milk, etc. in a hurricane. Legal? Oh yes, plenty legal. Right? No. But right is of no concern to those whose only concern is the almighty dollar. Such people will excuse anything in the name of money. Limits on the number of boxes/rounds one may purchase daily are of course one way to deal with them. A better way would be to simply tell everyone to sign a register... and then only allow them to buy once a week. No need for a law. The retailer could do this w/ nothing more than a simple policy change. It would certainly crimp the action for the flippers. If some opine that such limits are not fair, so what? Fair hasn't got anything to do with it. And since it would allow more people to buy ammo and at the same time sidetrack the flippers, it would be better for the shooting sports. Cool.

I haven't purchased any reloading components or ammo since before 2012. Except for a pound of powder I was wanting and saw at the LGS last year.
I've been thru 3 or 4 ammo / reloading component shortages. However this shortage does seems to be the longest one.
And I usually try to stay at least a year ahead on my supplies. Because most of the year I will shoot in some sort of local match about every weekend.
I am sorry for your situation. And I too wish the ammo shortage was over. ( I didn't shoot in a winter Bullseye league because of the lack of 22 target ammo.)
But, 'not being fair', ' people having more than they need ', ' some people being selfish ', ' take from the rich and give to the poor', sounds like the same socialist **** that got us into this mess in 2012.

As others have mentioned, use the resources that are available to you. This very forum has an ammo thread, people buy ammo from links posted there every day. You could be one of them. Gunbot.net and ammoseek.com will help you find online deals. Findmeammo.com and brassbadger.com will find you Walmart ammo.

And if you don't have the money to buy, then availability isn't really an issue, is it? What good is finding a brick that you don't have money for? Look when you have the cash, there is ammo out there for those who want it badly enough.

And yes, I'm one of those "braggers" with a "hoard" of .22lr, because I used my tax return money and monitored four Walmarts daily buying my three box limit. I'm sitting on about 3800 Federal and 1100 Remington Golden, and shooting them up at a rate of 200 per range trip. I go to the range at least twice a week, sometimes up to five times a week. This is my hobby, and I pay dearly for it. I work 60 hours a week, so don't think I had tons of free time to wait by the ammo case at Walmart.. I bought a bunch of ammo on lunch breaks, or before work.. I got most of my ammo by calling the four Walmarts near me and rushing out when they said they had some. It doesn't get much more basic than that.

If your only attempts to get ammo are looking at the ammo case when you happen to drive to a store that sells it, then you are going to be without ammo for awhile. So my suggestion to you is to use the resources I and others have mentioned whenever you have the money, time, and health to go get ammo. Be patient, I got way more no responses than yes responses, but I kept at it everyday that I could and I bought enough ammo that I just stopped looking. When I shoot up most of it, I'll be on the lookout again, and I'll find it..

Did you really just suggest an ammo registry? Do you not see the irony in your statement about fair has nothing to do with it, yet you suggest limits and a registry for what purpose... to make it fair?

Umm, no... If you have an issue with the flippers, get up early and beat them to the store. Or, like has been previously suggested, use the resources available online to obtain ammo at normal pricing. The only ones who I have seen that do not have ammo are the ones whining about it, and still expect to walk into Walmart at anytime and find it on the shelf. The ones who put forth a little effort have ammo. I'm not a flipper, or a hoarder, but even my meager stash would make the have nots cry foul. Most of what I have obtained this year has come from the ammo thread.
