Why this ammo shortage has now made me mad.

One of the reasons this has been my only gun forum for over a year is that usually I can expect to find people dealing with each other in a positive, civil manner.

This kind of thread seems to be an exception.

It's easy to level charges of whining and lack of forethought and preparedness when you are already sitting on a pile of ammo, you have the money to pay for more, and you're healthy enough to shop all over hell and stand in line to get it.

If you're in that blessed situation, more power to you. I'm not, due to old age, poor health, and extremely limited income. I haven't been able to hunt or shoot as a hobby for years, but I very much want to be able to defend myself if necessary, and practice with my defensive guns.

When I see people told to stop whining and change hobbies, or just shut up and spend the money and effort to buy ammo, I feel rebuked myself even if it's not directed at me personally.

If someone hasn't walked in another person's shoes, it would be nice not to jump on him and label him a careless, heedless whiner.

I think I'd better avoid ammo-shortage threads in future. This post may get me labeled a malcontent piss-and-moan artist, and I wouldn't like that.

I understand what you are saying, but many of us have offered to help others learn how to use online tools to see when stock is available, and have pointed them to the ammo thread, etc... on this and / or other boards.

Typically when I do these things, I get a response of why they can't get to the store in the AM, or they don't want to pay extra for shipping and they can't use ship to store, or they can't because of blah blah blah...excuse after excuse.

After trying to help so many just to hear that they can't, one becomes jaded. It becomes the same thing I tell my teenage son. Can't never could. Either choose to do something about it, or decide to do without. Constant complaining and then not following advice when someone is trying to help you doesn't solve anything.

Did you really just suggest an ammo registry? Do you not see the irony in your statement about fair has nothing to do with it, yet you suggest limits and a registry for what purpose... to make it fair?

Registry? To make it fair? Yes. That is precisely what I suggest. It would be the decision of the retailer, just as now it is the decision of the retailer to restrict or not restrict the amount a customer can purchase. Why should retailers not act in policy and system to address the needs of a broader base of customers? If that crimps the style of the flippers, that's cool.

Why would this be a problem? If posts are to be taken at face value, there are currently individuals who delight in the current system as it apparently well serves their own particular interests. They get to a store, strip the shelves bare and go merrily along their way. Of course there are many many people who have to go to work and cannot stand around all hours waiting for a store to stock shelves. Others do not live anywhere near a retail establishment that occasionally has .22 LR ammunition in stock. And surprising as it may seem to some, not everyone is conversant with computers, not everyone understands how to use the various tools that some take for granted. For many at this site, the availability thread on the 15-22 forum has been extremely helpful. I am among those who have been benefited Once the links to Cabales died, finding ammo has again become very much hit or miss.

Opinions as to why someone has been unable to find ammo, they are like noses. Everyone has one. You are welcome to your own. As regards flippers... they are as described earlier, a pox to this sport.

I think you are the first gun owner I have ever heard say that they would support some type of registry... It isn't any of Walmart's business how much ammo I buy. They are there to sell, I am there to buy, that is all that they need to know. If they want to limit amounts, that is within their right, but they don't need to keep a record of how much I purchased. (although they already do since I use a debit card, but still):D

If some opine that such limits are not fair, so what? Fair hasn't got anything to do with it.

You are saying that the flippers get all the ammo... so that's not fair. So you think we should have limits and registries to make it fair... yet fair has nothing to do with it.

Wow did I ever smack a hornets nest. Sorry about that. I know some people have put a lot of time and effort and money into getting their supply of ammo, and they deserve it. Why not? They worked for it. Those where not the ones I was referring to in my post and since I must have come off as seeming I was I apologize to those fine folks. And to those who still buy for friends. We need more people in this world like you. And I could use a few as friends too. LOL I do have one friend who will sometimes buy ammo for me when he sees it. But he doesn't get around much more than me.

And to the poster that told me that since sometimes I don't have the money for ammo I should not be buying ammo or guns as there are more important things. Well there are more important things. That is why sometimes I don't have money for ammo because I used it on more important things. But because I might have a bad month and not be able to buy ammo, doesn't mean I can never buy it and that I would let responsibilities go just to buy ammo. And when I bought my guns, ammo was around and affordable.

And to those who gave advice. I do appreciate it and will use it. And I will keep a eye on the ammo thread on this forum. Should have done that already.

Last week I was in Walmart really early and went to the ammo counter. They had exactly 9 bricks of 22 ammo that just came in. two guys ahead of me bought three each. Now it's my turn. I hear the guy behind me with his young son say 'please, don't buy .22" under his breath. I bought ONE box. Turned to the guy and said they're all yours. Guy thanked me profusely. Was heading to the range right after he got the ammo to shoot with his son.

Sorry, but I think people who glom all they can when they can are selfish. Within 3 minutes of that ammo being put out, it was all gone. I know guys with over 100,000 rounds of .22.

It really is the best way. Heck, even click on a Cabela's link that was posted a day or two before... you might get lucky! If you don't, bookmark that link and then check it several times a day. If you hit, place your order, then go to the ammo thread and post your link and let everyone know that Cabelas has ammo up again. If you have a smart phone, try it from there. Sometimes the mobile version shows different stock than the computer version.

That was nice of you. You didn't have to do it, but it was a good thing to do.

  • Ammo is NOT a necessity...

Sorry, but that's incorrect. In a practical context (e.g. for self defense, hunting, maintaining proficiency, etc.), a firearm without ammo is nothing more than an expensive club. Therefore, ammo very much IS a necessity.

Beating a dead horse, indeed...
