There "should" be some good come out of this, regardless of what
happens to the happy leaker. It's about time that the government
quit thinking that it doesn't need to worry about security. Somebody
must have really dropped the ball for all this to happen.

I think Manning deserves most of the blame, and should sit where
he is until he rots. He's the one with clearance that leaked all the
documents. Being as Mr. Wikileak isn't even a citizen of this country,
he is not subject to our laws. Well, unless they decide to prosecute
for espionage. Being as he is not a citizen, it's hard to say what his
motives are. Anyway, jerk or not, I consider him the lesser of the two
evils. Manning on the other hand... If it were not for him, none of
this would be in the news right now. This will not look good on his
resume..

Let's be clear about what he is actually charged with -- consensual sex during which the condom broke. This is a felony in Sweden. The fact that Britain is resisting the extradition request is because this is not an offense in Britain. I admit that it strains credulity to believe that this could happen twice to the same guy in Sweden, but who knows, perhaps they use inferior latex or something.

I am hoping that our Swedish brother -- QBall -- will chime in on this.

Wikileaks-Like-A-Bad-Diaper: there's A LOT more to this.
I find it a real big stretch that an Army Private would have all the clearances necessary to do what he is alleged to have done, at least not without a lot of high up help and by that, I mean outside the military.

If he was able do this, it shows a MONUMENTAL failure AT ALL LEVELS.

If anything, I think this is the sequel to the Valerie Plaine incident back in the last regime. It is not over by a long shot. We can assume everything and anything but I doubt if the truth will come out at all.

When you cut away all the BS, it is POLITICS.

Before you go wanting to kill the guy and calling him a criminal someone needs to identify what law he has actually broken (apart from the Swedish business).
Check the details - no one has identified any law he has broken with respect to leaking docs (yet).

Down here he's getting a lot of support with the media pusing the line "More people have been by friendly fire in Afghanistan than will ever die from what has been leaked".

The people who moved the data from the classified network to the unclassified - they have comitted a crime. I've seen a "classified network", and the one I saw it would take a lot of effort to get stuff off it, and even if you did there would be a trail so they would know who did it.

The whole thing sort of reeks of the Clintons, in my opinion. Most likely, those that know what's going on aren't talking, and those that are talking don't know what's going on. This would be sort of a best case scenario, IMHO.

However, it's never a good idea to underestimate the evil and damages that can be wrought by a bunch of over-zealous and excessively verbose radicals that appear to be playing for media attention. It could very well be what it appears; a bunch of stinking, self-righteous old hippies, wannabe Woodward & Bernsteins, and/or generation x-ers with their heads stuck up their butts and too much time on their hands. I think that anybody that participated in the theft and distribution of such classified material should be taken out behind a barn and have the crap beaten out of them. And then maybe thrown in jail. Frankly it boggles the mind that a Pfc could somehow download 1/4 of a MILLION Classified doc's and theres no FAIL SAFE, or security protocol to prevent it. WTH?? Big time FAIL right there.

Unless theres a scheme at play here we are all unaware of.

The other thing that has been in my mind since the entire WikiLeaks thing started with the first leak...Wonder how this would have shaken out had the classified documents been Israeli or Soviet?? Had that been the case...the broken rubbers would have been the LEAST of Assanges problems.

Boy this is a powerful thread.

There are so many issues that really need to be decided.

Let us look at just a few.

On a practical level the major problem that I see is the actual release of the documents. That person, I think should be in a world of hurt. Does it reach the level of treason? Not sure in my mind, but I am certain there are a number of statutes violated that should put him away for a very long time.

A lot of the releases are just plain an embarressment. Not in the best interest of the American government but speaking plainly has it's risks. Look to see more coded discussions at the diplomatic leve.

The major problem I see is the potential loss of cooperation should the name of someone that has helped the USA be released. In a worst case scenario, they could lose their life with retaliation.

The other problem I see is the attitude of those associated with Wikileaks. The willingness to attack anyone they perceive as an enemy is disturbing.

I can understand their issue with Mastercard, PayPal, etc. They are compromising their finances. I disagree but see their point of view.

But to go after those that criticize, and treat them as enemies, Ms. Palin as an example, is an abuse and a little high handed on their part.

Overall, this should start some very interesting discussions on the power and extent the Internet has and the power and responsibilities of the sites.

Since Al Gore invented this thing I am certain he has a solution. Sorry could not resist.

Not sure where this will all end up. But at any rate, we should be witness to some very interesting developments in the upcoming days.

I think you are getting close to the heart of the story here. I expect the govt to now start working on "protecting" us from that evil thing that Al Gore invented. I think this may tie into the "fairness" doctrine the admin is talking about. Someone questioned how a PFC could download 250,000 secret documents. It's even better than that. It is my understanding that the PFC was being trained! I have to wonder, was anyone watching him? I also heard he used a Lady GaGa CD to get the files out. No one checked the CD when he left.

It gets curiouser and curiouser.

I really don't buy the government conspiracy bit. I see the threats to financial and government institutions in retaliation as nothing more than terrorist extortion. I don't have a problem with our government having secrets, and I don't think everything our diplomats say among themselves should be broadcast to the world. And actually, with the way it works now, where a geek who has illusions of Dr. No or Lex Luthor, can hack into computers and access files that can wreck lives and shut down major financial and government operations, then it's time that controls and tracking devices be brought about.

Going forward, the fear of retaliation is going to make other nations hesitant to speak freely and exchange restricted info with the US government. What better way to cause chaos than to break down communications between world powers.

Double Bingo, Moon. Putin's already come out and said it plainly on Larry King -- people are not going to be inclined to discuss sensitive information when they are afraid they may be identified in an American diplomatic cable. Very troubling.

With the end of "plausible deniability," we are going to see some dramatic upheavals in the way business gets done, and it is not going to be pretty.

I've always believed that if it's written/photoed/recorded anywhere at any time it can show up anywhere by anyone.
Heck, if the first written law known "the code of Hammurabi" can be pulled up and a picture of it and all the laws translated, what makes anyone thing anything recorded in any way can't be disseminated?

Same way with this forum- if it's on here, it's completely public and could show up and be used by anyone for anything. I'm not paranoid, I'm being realistic.

The only way for something no to show up, is not to write, record it, or talk on the phone about it- period. If it's a secret, and it's written down, it's no secret anymore.

I wasn't talking about them- I am not qualified to pontificate on such vermin, nor the vermin that serve under them, or the vermin that steal from other vermin in order to harm our fine fighting men, nor vermin that have any other devious power-trip mindset, whether governmental or commercial. Treason and spying should be deal with the traditional way- with lead, and quickly.

Only thing I can figure, is...it's bad. I'm just wondering if there is something else working behind the scenes and this is just a smoke and light show to cover something else more important- as I say, I'm not qualified- but...who is in charge of the state department? I rest my case.

I'm just saying that's the way I advise each honest hardworking American patriot to do in this day and age.
