Noted author Wilbur Smith (over 120 million books sold) is seen here at a signing in Bangalore, India. He and wife Niso make such field trips while researching his books. He also had sponsors here: Land Rover, The Glenlivet scots whisky, and a famous bank.
Some here read his adventure novels, but won't have heard him speak.
This video isn't as sharp (resolution) as others, so I may add another, but he tells some good anecdotes here that I think will make you laugh, so posted it.
Other YouTube videos filmed at his home and at a TV station in Cape Town show his lovely house. Quite a view, but I'd not like to be the lad who has to cut the grass on that large lawn!
I enjoy getting to know authors better via such videos. You can get a keen sense of them that way if you can never meet them in person.
I've read Smith's books from the first, 1965. I think his titles appear first in South Africa and the UK, with US editions within weeks or months. I believe they're printed in 26 languages! His wry humor comes across well here and the story about the Aussie boy who lost a leg in a train accident and was inspired by a Smith book to change his attitude and embrace his changed life more ardently is inspiring.
His autobiography, "On Leopard Rock" was published in May and I'm reading it. Like his novels, it's hard to put down until fully read.
I've never met Smith or shared a drink or tea, and certainly won't profit from publicizing his work. I no longer work where I once reviewed books, so don't even get a free book. But I like to tell others about some author or product that I endorse just because I like them. So, here's Smith. I think you'll enjoy meeting him in this video, and others.
