I think just because it is listed under polymer frames doesn't mean a lot. I think by the looks of this it is much more than a sigma could offer. I think the differences are more like a cavalier versus a camaro versus a corvette.

I agree but who really knows what goes on at the Braintrust at S&W.

i have not formulated an opinion on "what category this gun should be listed in" because I have not had a chance to shoot it yet.

but from the S&W feedback, tech specs and diagrams it looks THE SAME as a sigma minus several changes.

Does anyone else see this too?

tech specs can now be found at S&W website for more info.

ceapea- good to know our info is accurate.

Kywstjoe- i have no word yet on the sd45. S&W usually lets the 9mm and .40 have a year or two run before they release the larger caliber version of the model.

so if you ask me...two years for the .45....just like the sw99...two years later the .45 was released.

when i get official info on this i will make sure to post it for you.

The Sigma line will be gone from S&W's web sight by Christmas.

Whats left of S&W's inventory of VE frames and slides will be clearanced out to CDNN and a couple of other gun clearance houses. Where the remnants of the VE's will be sold off for most of next year.

I talked to S&W yesterday and they said they had no plans on discontinuing the Sigma. He said that the Sigma is their best seller and that the SD would effectively price them out of that segment. If they were to sell the SD at the Sigma price they would lose money on every one they produce. He said the frames may look the same on the outside but the trigger design is completely new and not compatible with Sigma frames. He also said the sear sits differently and has 0 components from the sigma in the slide. All of this information corresponds to what they have been posting on FB. He also said that while the SW99 was not a good seller it still brought in additional business because of the price point they had. He also said those people went elsewhere instead of saving a little or spending more and they lost market share because of it. Hence the reason for the SD. From what he was saying they have had the SD design for several years and were making refinements and doing extensive testing. He said they have test models with over 100,000 rounds through them with "great success". So I still want to hold one and feel the trigger and tear one down. But, if it is as good as they say I will have one before summer is over.

Thats funny. That slide release and mag catch sure look like Sigma part numbers to me and they would be in the frame.

No offence, but somebodies sisters brother in law, who sweeps up metal shavings off the floor at S&W or the guy on the customer service phone bank are seldom hip deep in cooperate planning and just as in the dark about the marketing strategy of the front office as the general public. Anybody thats ever worked in a large factory floor or office knows this.

The family member informant and the guy on the S&W phone banks first inkling that Sigma production was at an end would more than likely be a memo telling them "Put all those Sigma's on pallets boys. The 9mm Melonites go to A-stan and the rest go to CDNN. " Thats all for the VE folks." 24 to 48 hour before the VE's went extinct.

He said they all had to attend a meeting where the SD and Sigma were the topic. They just went through it yesterday morning so I'm sure he knows what he is talking about. Either way I could care less. But it seems like so many people are ready to send the sigma packing. And as far as parts looking the same, in life there are many things that look the same on the outside but when you take them apart and really see for yourself they have little in common. Now the slide stop and the mag release are very simple parts but I was just sating what he told me. He also said they will begin shipping to dealers and whole sellers next week.

It just makes no sense that S&W would run a three tiered line of polymer pistols in the current gun sales environment.

The car company Chevette, Camero, Corvette example, voiced in one of these SD threads doesn't hold water. The car companies are going broke offering to many models. The management of S&W is probably pretty sure there is no golden parachute' Obama bail out plan for the American firearms industry.

I'm honestly shocked its not just the VE's on the chopping block, but 95% of the 39 and 59 linage alloy framed pistols as well.

Chevy didn't drop models, they are actually adding models. GM dropped brands. It makes perfect sense to add a third polymer frame if there is room for profit and the ability to capture market share. Simple concept. Not everybody wants a sigma but not everyone can afford the M&P. Cater to the group who may be looking at the XD, SR9 etc. Offer a better feeling gun in that group and you will sell them.

If memery serves me right it seems as though I recently read that the metal frame third gen. guns were to be no more..
Time will tell..

What would be nice is if they reduced the price on the Sigma's to create a price gap between the Sigma-CD-MP.

Well, I can dream....:)

Wonder how long it will take to get Mass approved ??
Looks like Sigma mags with different floor plates, maybe M&P..
Maybe fire control system like M&P,,,in other words,fixable...
I think it looks good, need to get one in hand though..

Looks like the SD40 only comes with 1 mag. That's a bummer. Might have to wait for a rebate deal on the SD40. Or... get a Sigma 40VE, rebate just out, good to Oct. 30th.
Two mags, OOPS! (not the 1st time I was wrong)
