Windshield washer fluid (rant)

Went to buy some windshield washer fluid a couple of weeks ago. All I found advertised on the front of the jug "PROTECTS TO +32 DEGREES" WTH?

Bet the label goes something like this.

Contains 1% ammonia 99% water!

Fluid is low enough that it won't pump onto the windshield. Get a gallon of the pink stuff. Fill up tank. There is about an inch left in the gallon jug. Why not make the tank big enough to hold an entire gallon?

I will continue to wish in one hand and **** in the other, to see what gets filled first, but, I have this fantasy of the tank holding over a gallon, and the idiot light coming on when it hits the less than a gallon point.....then you could safely add a gallon with no risk of overflow, and not have to wait until the tank was dry....

Don't ever buy the "environmentally safe" stuff. If it sits a while it turns to green pond scum looking stuff!

I buy the winter version(alcohol based) and make to bottles 50:50 with water.

Sure you can make your own but those with ice and freezing need the iso alcohol to prevent freezing or to drink while stranded on the road.

IIRC, most washer fluid is 90%-95% water and 5%-10% methanol alcohol with only traces of detergent and coloring. The main purpose of the alcohol is to prevent freezing.

I also usually dilute mine with water in the summer. I'll pour a half gallon into the tank then fill it up with water. In winter I usually don't dilute it - because I don't want to end up replacing a tank that froze and cracked.

3) Fill reservoir.

I top mine off every time I change the oil, so I'm never empty when I need it.
