Wish I had a SB snub Model 586 or 686.

I had just done a thread about SB snub Model 19's and 66's. It occurred to me just how cool a S&W Model 586 snub would be with a square butt! Or a 686, but the 586 would be awesome!

If by any chance anyone has swapped barrels to make one of these, either 586 or 686 snubs, please share!!

I had s&w put a 2 1/2" barrel on a square butt model 19.

I have seen pics of those, I really want one one of these days. Before I owned any Smiths I didn't think I'd like square butts on snub guns of any size, but as it turns out my first Smith was a snub 15-3 which only comes in SB and I absolutely love it. I do not like RB J frames except the few that only come that way (40/42 & 38/49). I have 2 SB snub Chief's Specials and I love them. They, in my opinion, are "one of" the perfect carry guns. That SB fills out my hand very nicely. Once I realized I loved the SB on my 15, I started to like SB Model 10's as well. Only liked RB snub 10's before that. I still really like the K frame RB, but the SB has a wonderful feel in my hand. My Model 15 is one of my all time favorite handguns. I wanted that gun for most of my life, even as a kid and I didn't even really like revolvers as a kid. However, the blued snub 15 with SB and magna grips I have wanted for a long time. Once I got it, it was a great feeling. Well worth the wait.

Anyhow, since I fell in love with the K frame SB, I have since wanted a 19 blued snub with a SB and recently thought about a 586 snub with a SB. I was looking at my 15 and really, the only difference between that and a snub 586 w/a SB was the shroud around the ejector rob instead of the small lug and it's caliber (Edit: oh yeah, and the barrel is 1/2" longer!) (and of course the pinned barrel). Once I realized this, I love it even more now.

If I ever get enough money to buy 2 snub 586's and a longer barrel, I definitely want to put a snub barrel on a SB. One day it'll happen, of this I'm sure.

Good luck on The 586. From my recollection only a couple hundred were imported in the 90's. Must look that one up.

Edit:heres a thread about them. Yes they are nice to look at

NICE, thanks! I've heard a bunch about the 596 snub. There were a few hundred imported from somewhere (Rio maybe?) that were 38 special only (this is what I've been told, can't confirm) and that maybe 5,000 or less were made in 357 in the states and maybe some over seas (this I also cannot confirm). Beautiful guns.

I do not really like new Smiths at all. I don't like the lock, and of the models that are still offered, there's only a couple I would consider spending money on (instead of buying older Smiths and Colts) are the Model 69 snub (which that's a new model, they don't have an older one) and the 66 and 686. I don't like the finish of the 66 and I'd just assume wait til I find an older one. The new 686 snub isn't a bad gun by any means. Probably one of the nicest new revolvers on the market in my opinion. However, I just can't bring myself to buy one because I'd rather have an older one. BUT, if Smith started to offer a blued 586 snub 7 shot revolver, I am positive I'd buy one. If it looked just like the new snub 686+ but was blued, I wouldn't be able to talk myself out of buying it. Lord only knows why they aren't offering this with as great as the 686 is selling. It would have to be true blued though for me to buy. No matte black or any of that, but actually blued. That would look beautiful. I am already so close to giving in and getting a 686+, but if a blued one came out, I'd go for it for sure as I'm sure a TON of other people would as well. I need to get a hold of someone in charge at S&W.....

I ran across a 586 with a 4" barrel but the blueing was a little ruff and the grips had seen better days. He was asking 450 for it but I just didn't have the cash on me then

I have both a 686 2 1/2 and a three inch All I can say is save your pennys and dimes They both are well worth the investment
Besides as my spouse says after 7 shots I can beat the intruder to death with it They are money well spent

There is a LGS near here that did have a 2.5" 686 barrel. I've ask the owner several times to price it but has not yet.
What would a 2.5" 686 barrel be worth?

Here is my 681 Square Butt with 2 1/2" barrel. Not exactly what you are looking for but close.

That's one of those guns that I'd want it in pristine condition if I'm going to buy one. Do not want to spend a bunch of money for a beat up shooter version.

Wooooooow man, I didn't think if like a snub 5/681, but that is awesome! It is what the model 10 is to the 19, that's cool, if blued......wow!

Here is my 686 + 3"......I was going to conceal carry it, but it is to heavy for my liking.

I had the gun and reached the same conclusion. Not sure why, but it feels so much bigger to me than a 2.5 or 3" k-frame.

I kinda had the feeling it would be. Once I get one it'll mostly be for at the pad, or in my truck with something smaller on me. Still want one bad though!

I own a 686-6 three inch and I don't get the weight concern but I carry AIWB. Maybe if it was OWB at 4 O Clock it would then be too heavy. I think weight of guns are no where near as important if it is carried AIWB. It's no hanging off the belt on one side of the person like it would be if carried at 4 O Clock OWB.

Just my theory.
