I am getting ready to put a reduced power Wolff hammer spring in my 610. Will I need to remove the side plate? What is the best way to get the plate off after removing the screws?

To install the mainspring only grip removal is nesassary..
To install the rebound spring the sideplate will need to be removed..
After removeing screws with propper paralell ground bits..
Hold the revolver sideplate up with thumb from left hand just resting on top of the sideplate..
With a rubber or wood screwdriver or mallet, non marring, Strike the grip frame were the the right grip would be, right in front of the grip indexing pin, several small strikes should loosten the sideplate.
Some fit pretty tight but NEVER pry on the sideplate as this will warp it.. Some take several good strikes, the vibration & inertia is what removes them..
Congrats on the 610 BTW..

Well worth the effort. Also, if you're not sure how to do it...there's a couple little tricks that could make it worth watching your 'smith do a few before you leap in, loose the springs, warp the side plate, and have to go with a box full of parts to see him any way....and get the book everyone says it's worth getting, to read the process and see the step by step photos.

don't ask how I have heard of this happening to wayward pilgrims....

Take the time to learn how to hone just the right places a bit and you will be well rewarded. My 610 has a glass smooth 28 oz trigger SA. Perfect.

If you just want to smooth up / lighten the action, Jerry Miculek's "Trigger Job" video (DVD) is a better tutorial.

However they do not show how to remove the sideplate. Follow Headknocker's directions for that.

These are all good answers, but first of all, if you don't know how to remove a side plate, you are NOT ready to start replacing springs or whatever. Get the book FIRST, and/or Jerry's video, then read it before you attempt to do anything. You will thank us later.
