A basic kit isn't expensive, and all you have to really do is go slow and fresh out the old checkering. Very good practice and it keeps you humble. I have done it quite a bit as well as converting the old 1970s pressed checking to real checkering. If you screw up most people won't notice anyway, but you will learn what to look for. Do it in good light, preferably natural light. Apply the new sealer and stock finish with an old toothbrush and things will look a lot better.
I have never gotten up the nerve to checker a rifle stock from scratch, though.
