Worst beer?

Back in the early 70s the pipeing contractor I worked for did a lot of maintenance for the Schaefer brand in Albany.

Believe it or not you were allowed to drink the beer while you worked. There was a room called "The Bunk'' and it always had ice cold fresh made on tap. You could not take any home but you could drink on the job using your own cup. They did have a well enforced rule of not getting drunk or disorderly. No warnings, you were gone.

Also there was a lot of double time OT available and that tended to keep the guys in line. The beer was available for the plant personnel and also us contractors.:D I did not find it that bad of a beer!

India Pale Ale followed closely by Schmidt. Rather be forced to drink a glass of water mixed with cigarette ashes,

I'll second the IPA comment. I really can't understand the obsession with IPA's. It seems that most bars/restaurants with decent beer menus are at least 3/4 IPA's. Haven't found one I'd order again.

One I used to really enjoy that I haven't seen in years is San Miguel Dark. Not sure if its still made. Its been so long since I've had one I'm not sure how it would stack up against some of the newer craft beers. Locally, Four Peaks Brewery makes a Scottish Ale called Kilt Lifter that isn't half bad.

I found a whole case of Red Cap in those cans with the bottle cap
top. Cans were in beatiful shape but you talk about pole cat, a
shunk smelled better. I sold them to a collector who was going to
drill hole in bottom of can to drain them. The house must have
had a employee of Duke Brewing Co in it at one time because I
found stacks of blanked out cans for 3 different Pittsburg beers
that are Lithoed but not formed into cans. I still have them and
from style of labels they are late 40s early 50s vintage.

Dad told me about having Rupert Beer in Iceland during WWII

My Dad used to tell a story about the worst beer he ever saw.
During WW2, He was a Company Commander in the Pacific. When the company would
get its beer ration, all different brands of beer, it was delivered in the back of a duce & ½.
Dad would line up the company and have them choose their case of beer. Lowest Private first,
then the second lowest next and so on up to the 1st SGT. Then the officers, 2LTs first then the 1LT XO.
Dad, as a Capt and commander, got what was left. It was always "Rupert Beer".
He hated the stuff until he died.

Dad told me about having Rupert Beer while stationed in Iceland during WWII
Dad's comments were not favorable either.

Thanks for bring the memory of DAD back.

For those detractors: IPA is definitely an acquired taste much like single malt scotch. If you don't like it -fine there's plenty of other beers in other styles to chose from.
As I remember it the beer with a skunky reputation when I was growing up in New England was Naragansett!

Trick to making bad beer drinkable is to get it really COLD. Back when I was in college the dorms all had CO2 fire extinguishers. Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of the physics of expanding gasses knows what happens when you unload one of those suckers onto a case of beer :D Got to the point that they had to recharge all of them every Monday after a home game. ;)
When I was at NAS Millington (Memphis) around 1970 we used LOX (Liquid oxygen) for the same purpose. You had to be careful or you could easily freeze a can.

Forgot to mention...

...this truly horrific 'beer.' No exaggeration. Found it in my 'fridge. Likely someone broke in and put it there with the intent to kill me!

Seriously, I could not drink a bottle of this if someone was holding a gun to my head. Not kidding! Took two sips, poured the rest down the sink, and burned the bottle.

Be safe.

Actually back then....

Funny thing about this topic is that a lot of people are talking about experiences from decades ago. One observation I've made over many, many years is that some beers which might have been good tasting in the 60's, 70's or 80's...just don't taste the same today. "Reissue" beers are even less like their historical counterparts. IMHO, most mass produced beers have gone downhill taste and quality-wise over the last couple of decades.

The cheap stuff was all I could afford, especially is I had a big expense like a new water pump for $60 and some odd dollard. It was bad then. I haven't been nearly as desperate since those late teens/early 20s days. Besides, never having tried it, why not a sample some cheap beer? All I was interested in was the alcohol, anyway. At least I thought I was until your body had to process the non-alcohol part.:eek::confused::confused::eek:

Maybe this???

Just saying...

The worst beer I ever had was a "Bock" style or at least that's what the bottle was claiming. I can't recall the name of the beer or the brewery, it was many years ago.

A local specialty market was selling it by the case and with returnable bottles on top of that for some ridiculously cheap price. After the refund from the bottle return I think I ended up paying under $5 for the whole case.

At that price I got ripped off. I drank one bottle, tried to choke down the second and then ended up dumping the rest down the drain. I never saw that beer anywhere again, thank God!

I will most definitely never forget -
In the Indianapolis 500 infield - that's where the crazies are-
Seeing the trunk of a full size car completely filled with beer and ice.
When you got a big car trunk, you don't need no stinking cooler!

Here's one from way back there along memory lane: Billy Beer.

Remember it? Jimmy Carter's brother's brand?

I tried it once, and once only. Epically bad.

On the flip side, too bad Yuengling wasn't available in my state back in those days. Much later, I discovered it, and it's my favorite American beer now. Thank you, Pennsylvania!

Remember it well. Came out about the same time as this, which was also epically bad at $1.69 a six pack. The grocery store I worked at finally sold both for 99 cents, and I think we ended up tossing a couple flats of each.
