Would/could a 629-4 have been ported from the factory?

I am looking at a sweet 629-4 6" Smith with what looks to be factory porting. But the current owner and myself have not been able to secure any info where this was a factory option for a 629-4. Any help please?

If it has the slabsided barrel (flat on the sides) it is factory. Product code 170056, 6" barrel, non fluted cylinder with a RB grip frame, Mag Na Ported barrel, recessed crown and scope broaching.
500 made for RSR distributing in %/1995. 2 additional variations made for Lew Horton Dist. per SCSW

if the port looks like this.......

it would be a 629 classic with a power-port and yes it's factory. and one of my favorite .44's to shoot

There are no standard production 629-4 Classics with ports that look anything like magnaporting in the SCSW, only the power ported ones. So far as I know the Performance Center ones were as Gun 4 Fun described them and any other PC 629-4s presumably would have been PC marked. Magnaport does a good business so it's a lot more likely that a previous owner sent the 629-4 to them than that it is and unheard of rarity.

Best Regards,

Gil

I do not remember the year 91-93 S&W and RSR offered a special run of 4 & 6 inch 629 with Magna Porting. It was a special offer for stocking dealers only. I do not remember how many if any were shipped as the flyer was sent out for pre orders.

Mine dates to 1993. I will post pictures so you guys can tell me if it looks like a factory job. It is an amazing job if it is not factory.
