There are a lot of gun manufacturers that produce a semi-automatic M14 clone. Springfield Armory's M1A is perhaps the most popular. The big issue that a lot of people have with the SA M1A is that the receiver is not forged like mil-specs call for. It's cast.

I would like to see Smith & Wesson produce a semi-automatic M14 clone with all forged parts, as per mil-spec! I would buy one in a heartbeat!

What does everyone think about this?

Springfield Armory makes a very large variety of M1A's to satisfy the many people that want such guns. I would at least like to see Smith & Wesson do some marketing research to identify the niche market for M1A's and to make a better, truly Mil-Spec, M14 clone that would take Springfield Armory's market share.

SW doesn't have the tooling or experience for it, and SA and the handful of others have great offerings. Smith would take a bath on the whole process.

I'd be interested in buying one too. Until I saw the price. The SA is not a cheap rifle and I have a feeling making a more expensive version would go over like a lead balloon

Not enough demand for anything like that.
They function well, but they are big, ungainly and heavy.
I shot one for several years in High-Power Rifle competition on a military team.
I know that of which I speak.

I'd like to see them make a REAL pickup truck, by golly -- and I think they'd have just as good a chance of succeeding with that as they would with a M14.
